SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,869, dated December 27, 1898.

Be it known that I, WALTER G. Hans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Hat-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in knockdown hat-boxes, the features of which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of my invention is the construction of a hat-box which is manufactured as a knockdown box and is readily brought into proper shape and in which form a tape or cord serves to hold the parts in a sufiiciently rigid condition to answer the purposes of tradespeople.- The blanks necessary in the formation of the box are of but two pieces.

The device is constructed as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan of one of the blanks. Fig. 2 is a pian of the other blank. Fig. 3 is an inside view of the bottom. Fig. 4 is an outside view of the bottom. Fig. 5 is a top view of the box. Fig. (i is a longitudinal section of the box in its knockdown form.

Like letters and numerals designate like parts throughout the several views.

The box is formed of but two distinct pieces of paper,comprising the blanks shown in Figs. l and 2, the former consisting of the sides A A and ends B B. To these are respectively attached the flaps 7 7 to the ends and 8 and 9 to the sides and the engaging iiap l1 to be I glued to the end flap in forming the body.

At D, Fig. l, is shown in dotted lines the position of the bottom when it is glued to flap 9 of part'A.

In both of the ends and their respective iiaps are the series of slits l, 2, and 3 in vertical line, and in the iiap 8 of the side A are the slits 4 4 near the edge and the slits s s on the folding horizontal line. These slits are for the tape necessary to handle the parts in forming the box and in maintaining the parts in their proper relation. The blank D is the complement of the former blank and is provided with the orifices 5 5A and 6 6 for the tape and is glued onto the flap 9 of the side wall A, and when this part isfjoined with part B the body of the box is complete, with the exception of the usual form of cover, which forms no part of the invention and is therefore omitted'. The flaps 7 8 7 are turned up beneath the bottom and serve to support the same in position.

To bring the several parts in proper relation to form the box and to maintain its form, the tape 10 is requisite. The tape is of one piece and is attached as follows: It is drawn longitudinally through the slits s s, thence transversely through the lower slits 4 4, (see Figs. l and 4,) thence through orifices 6 G of the bottom D, thence through orifices 5 5 of the same at the central line, thence through slits 3 3 of flaps 7 7, over the corners, and through slits 2 and l in the end walls, and is then knotted. At Fig. 3 the tape is shown as seen from the inside. Fig. 4 shows the tape as shown on the bottom, with the three free flaps drawn up against the same.

Fig. 5 is a top view of the box with the tape tied across the same.

At Fig. 6 is shown the relation of the several parts in the knockdown form. In this form `the tape is drawn in sufficiently to admit of the parts being folded, and by draw# ing out the two ends the parts take the form of a box.
