SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,757, dated February 21, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, GILBERT L. J OHN- STONE, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, and CHARLES LEDERER, residing at Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown or Collapsible Boxes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to knockdown or collapsible boxes, and particularly to that class thereof designed to contain light articles of merchandise and to afford a neat and convenient vehicle for retaining or carrying the same; and the objects of the invention are to provide a neat and attractive device of this character which Will be cheap to manufacture, easily and quickly made up or put together, and wherein the parts willnot become disengaged in use; and With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying our improvements, the same being in an open position. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same closed. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the closed box, and Fig. 4 is a plan View of the blank from which our improved box is formed.

Similar characters of reference designate like parts throughout the several views.

In the accompanying drawings we have illustrated our improvements applied to a box having a ridged or wedge-shaped top or cover intended to represent a house, the top of the box forming the roof of the house; but it will be understood that we do not confine ourselves to this form or configuration, as it is only employed as an exemplification of our invention, and the same may be varied in practice, if desired.

Referring to the drawings, the reference character 1 designates a box or other article of any preferred form or configuration, preferably formed from a blank or a single sheet of suitable material, such as cardboard,which is cut, scored, and folded in a predetermined manner, so that a rectangular bottom or flap 2 will be formed having an extension along its free edge, and the ends of the extension project beyond the ends of the bottom 2, forming segmental tucks or ears 4, which afford means for retaining the bottom or flap 2 in position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the bottom is connected along one edge to and forms part of the front 5, to the upper and opposite edge of which is connected or forming a part is the front portion 6 of the roof-top or top of the box, and this portion 6 has extensions or

clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and from the upper edge of the back 19 extends the back portion 21 of the roof-top, having

22 and 24, respectively, and the extension 23 is provided with segmental tucks or cars 23, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

The blank constructed as above described is folded as shown in Fig. 1, whereupon the portion 6 is folded upon the pointed portions of the

10 and 8 respectively. Then the extension 9 is folded downwardly and the portion 21 is folded upon the pointed portions of the

11 and 12 and secured in the manner before described. The

22 and 24, respectively, and, lastly,the extension 23 is folded downwardly against the extension 9 and the segmental tucks or ears 23 engage the slots 9 of the portion 6 and the cover is closed. Forconvenienceboxesmaybeshipped folded in rectangular form.

From the foregoing description the construction and operation of this device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

\Ve do not desire to confine ourselves to the exact construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and we therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations thereof as come within the scope of our invention.

Having fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A knockdown or collapsible receptacle consisting of a rectangular front portion having connected to, the lower edge thereof, a rectangular bottom portion carrying the extension the ends of which form tucks or ears, a front top portion formed on the opposite edge of said front portion and provided along the free edges thereof with extensions on which are formed slots, a rectangular back portion provided with a rear top portion having formed along the side edges thereof lateral extensions, in which are formed slots, and along the top thereof, an extension provided with tucks or ears, end portions connected with side portions and having tapering upper portions carrying tucks or ears, and lower bottom extensions all adapted when folded to form a receptacle.

2. A knockdown or collapsible receptacle consisting of a front portion 5, with which is connected a bottom portion 2, carrying an extension, the ends of which form ears or tucks 4:, the front top or root portion 6, provided with
