JOSEPH A. VAUTROT, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
TOBACCO-BAG ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 672,657, dated April 23, 1901.
Application filed July 11. 1900.
T (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. VAUTROT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Bag Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tobacco-bag attachment, and pertains particularly to a collapsible funnel removably fitted in the mouth of the bag; and the object of the same is to provide simple and efiective means for pouring the contents of the bag into a pipe or cigarette-paper with economy in the use of the tobacco, convenience in depositing the same, and primarily forming advantageous means for carrying advertising matter, and of such a cheap nature that it can be given away by merchants and others and applied to any bag by the user.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed. In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a tobocco-bag, showing the improved device applied thereto and showing it open for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device closed. Fig. 3' is a plan view of the blank from which the device is formed.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 1 designates a common form of bag for containing tobacco and having a mouth 2 with a draw-string 3 for closing the same and arranged as will be readily understood. The collapsible funnel 4, embodying the features of the invention, is removably fitted in the mouth 2 of the bag and held intact therewith by the draw-string 3. This funnel is of rectangular form, andon the four panels thereof advertising matter is adapted to be placed either pertaining to one business Serial No. 23.254. (No model-l ings 6 are formed in the lower extremity of the funnel, into which the draw-string and the material of which the bag is form ed surrounding the same are drawn. The blank from-which the funnel is formed is shown by Fig. 3, and it will be seen that it is of substantially rectangular form and scored to provide three single panels and outer flaps 7, which are overlapped to produce the fourth panel. The openings 6 are so positioned in the blank that when the panels are regularly disposed to form the funnel they are located at the corners, and in each flap 7 a half-opening is constructed to coincide with that of the other to produce a complete opening. The upper central portion of one flap 7 is provided with a tongue 8 to slipthrough a slot 9 in the upper part of the other flap and be adhesively secured on the inner side of the latter flap when the funnel is completed, as clearly shown by Fig. 1.
To strengthen the funnel, it is proposed to suitably line the same at times with fabric, and thereby render it more durable, and the form and proportions of the device may also be varied. The material preferred for use in the man ufactnre of the device is cardboard, though other materials may be employed when desired. When in use, the funnel is opened, as shown by Fig. 1, and in this condition the contents of the bag can be conveniently directed into a pipe-bowl or into cigarette-paper in a positive manner without Waste. When it is desired to close the mouth of the bag, the funnel is collapsed, as shown by Fig. 2, and folded over on the body of the bag, and thereby prevent the contents of the latter accidentally spilling out.
The improved device can be easily applied by any one in operative position and will be an advantageous acquisition to a tobacco-bag.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture acollapsible funnel for insertion in the mouth of a bag and independent of the structure of the latter, the insertible end of the funnel having means for engagement with the drawstring in the mouth of the bag.
2. As an improved article of manufacture a collapsible funnel for insertion in the mouth portion of a tobacco-bag formed from a blank having a series of panels divided by folding In testimony that I claim the foregoing as lines and interlocking attaching devices in myown I havehereto a ffixed my signature in different parts thereof and connecting means the presence of two witnesses.
at the insertible end thereof to receive the JOSEPH A. VAUTRQT. 5 portion of the bag-mouth having the draw- Witnesses: 7
string therein, the funnel being foldable over CHAS. GREEN,
on the body of the bag. W. B. POWERS.
