Be it known that 1, Jonas L. Rmcnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofSandusky, the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented a'certain new and useful Shipping-Case; and I do hereby-dc clare the following to be a full, clear, and:

This invention relates 'to shipping and packing cases, and particularly to cases or containers of this class constructed offiber or paper board, but is notrestricted to suchuse as it may be used for any purpose for which it may be adapted or appropriate.

The object of my invention is the provision of an improved case of the character described, which is strong and durable in its construction, and capable of being easily and quickly set up and sealed and of openin at one side only thereof, thus insuring the p acing of the case in upright position-before opening, which in itself is quite an important feature in shipping cases, as it fre- .quently occurs that the shipping address is placed on the bottom instead of the to of cases of this class so that when open on i the addressed side the package or individual containers therein are in inverted position.

A further object of my invention is the provision of a. single-piece body blank for cases or containers of this or similar character, which blankis capable of being easily and quickly set up or knocked down and secured in folded or set-up form whereby to facilitate shipping and to enable a compact packing of the cases when not in use.

The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-

Foldably connected to the outer edge of each side B along a score line 8 is a sideflap F, and a tongue at at each end thereof, the tongues and flap being separated by slits 9. The side flaps F, F are of suitable width for them to overlap one another when the case is set up, as hereinafter described, and the tongues d are substantially equal in width to the tongues c.

The tongues c at the same end' are also folded one over another, as best shown in Fig. 5, and stapled, glued or otherwise suitably secured together'to retain the extensions E in their folded positions. The sides B, B are next raised to their upright positions and the tongues d folded down over the respective sets of connected tongues 0, with adjacent tongues d overlapping and secured one to the other in any suitable manner, or to the tongues c, to retain the sides in set-up position. The parts a of the end flaps D are then folded down fiat over the respective tongue sets o-d, and may be secured thereto by gluing, stapling, or in any other suitable manner. This leaves the side flaps F, F and the parts 6 of the end flaps D, D free .to have closing or opening movements relative to the open top of the case, as shown in Fig. 2.

It will be understood that when the case is infolded or set-upposition the extensions E, E extend the entire depth of the respective sides B, B and inward for a distance beyond the lapped tongue sets d to rein force the end portions of the case against collapsing stresses, which is found to be sliding fit over an end of the case.

In order to further reinforce and protect the end portions of the case from injury, I preferably provide a skeleton member G fur suchpurposes, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. This member is preferably in the form of a band of fiber or paper board, which band is angled or of L-shape in cross-section, with its angle opening inwardly, and is of a shape and size adapting it to have a close The flange of the member which fits over the case end is substantially equal in width to the part a of an end flap D to enable it to cover the same. While the members G may be secured to the case ends in any suitable manner, it is preferable to employ staples 10 with those at the top side extending throughthe part a and underlying tongues c-d. The corners of the members G are preferably interiorly reinforced, by fiber, paper or metal, as shown in Fig. 3.

In Fig. 6 the end refllforcing members are shown as comprising separate pieces h, h for fitting over the upper and lower edges of the case ends and covering the respective corners. In Fig. 7 the end protectors are shown as comprising individual corner protectors i. In sealing the case preparatory to shipping same after being packed it is only necessary to;' place -sealing strips 11 and 12 of any suitable material thereon, as shown in Fig. 1.

It is evident that I have provided a sin gle-piece packing case body, which is inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable in its construction and capable of being easily and quickly set up for use, and also that the ends thereof are reinforced; in a firm and secure manner, thus enabling the case to withstand hard usage in an efficient manner.

I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to'any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-

1. A case of the class described having ends, sides, a bottom and opentop, with reinforcing extensions projectin from the ends interiorly of and against t e end portions of the sides, tongues connecting the extensions in pairs across the end portions of the open top, tongues connecting the sides over said first tongues, and flaps hingedly connected to the upper edges of the sides and ends for closing the open top.

2. A case of the class described composed of a single-piece body blank having ends,

sides, a bottom and open top, with extensions projecting from the ends interiorly of and against the end portions of the sides, tongues connecting the extensions in pairs across the end portions of the open top, tongues connecting the sides over said first tongues, and flaps hingedly connected to the upper edges of the sides and ends for closing the open top.

3. A case of the class described havin a bottom, sides, ends and an open to with the ends hingedly connected to the ttom and provided with extensions projecting interiorly of the case against respective end portions of the sides and connected at their top edges adjacent to the ends by ton es, flaps projecting from the top edges 0 the ends and havinghingedly connected parts with the inner part lapping over and secured to said tongues, and flu projecting from the to edges of the si es for cooperating with t e free parts of the end flaps to close the open top.

4. A case of the class described, having a bottom, sides, ends and an open top, the .ends being hingedly connected to the bottom and having extensions projecting therefrom in contact with the adjacent end portions of the sides and connected at their top edges adj acent to the ends by tongues, tongues proj ecting from and connecting the end portions of opposing sides in lapping relation to said first tongues, a part projecting from the top edge of each end over and secured to the adj acent tongue set, and top closing flaps hingedly projecting from said parts and from the upper edges of the sides.

5. An article of the class described having a single-piece foldable body forming a bottom, sides, ends, and top closin flap, and

members embracing the end portions of the body when in folded form to reinforce the ends and to assist in maintaining the body in folded form, said members being of fibrous material.

6. An article of the class described having a bottom, sides, ends and an open top, ex-
