IMPROVEMENT lN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,469, dated February 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Mosns W. DILLINGHAM,
of Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to provide convenient and efficient means for holding the covers to paper boxes without tying them; and it consists in pieces of pasteboard or other suitable material attached to the box and to the cover, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a top view of the box with the cover off. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1 taken on the line :10 00. I

A is the body of the box. B is the cover. On the-outside of opposite sides or ends of the box, or on one or two of the corners and one of the ends or sides, I attach strips or pieces 0 of pasteboard or other suitable materialat or near the upper edge, as seen in Fig. 2. An angular piece, d, may be attached to one or two of the corners, with one or more pieces, O, on the opposite end or side. On the inside of the cover I attach similar pieces 6, arranged to correspond in position with the pieces on the box, and so that there shall be a recess for each piece on the box, as seen in Fig. 2, and. so that any two of such piecesone on the box and one on the cover--shall engage with-each other, as represented in Fig. 2, and thereby hold the cover securely to the box.
It will be seen that, with the pieces 0 or (1 attached to the box, as seen in Fig. 1, the cover, with pieces 0 thereon, may be adjusted to the box by springing inward the end f 0f the box, or the side, it the fastening-pieces are on the side or opposite corners of the box.
I do not confine myself to pasteboard for the fasteningpieces, as the pieces may be made of wood or any similar material. The main object is to secure the covers to paper boxes so that the boxes may be transported or used without being tied up with twine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with body A and cover B, of the pasteboard pieces 0 d e, constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
