CABINET, CHEST, AND SIMILAR ARTICLE Filed April 24, 1947 [flue/760A Patented Oct. 12, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 7 Claims.
The present invention relates to cabinets, chests, wardrobes and containers generally of the knock-down type made of paperboard and the like with wood trim if desired, and particularly wherein the ends are fitted onto the body portion.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a novel and improved locking joint to anchor the end members onto the body portion of the container, whereby erection of the article is facilitated and substantial strength added to the resulting structure.
Another object hereof is to provide a novel and improved locking joint construction, which is, simple to make, easy to use, which permits quick assembly, reasonable in cost, and efiective in carrying out the purposes for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent as this disclosure proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a chest embodying the teachings of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a cabinet made in accordance with this invention. It is to be noted that both said chest and this cabinet are of identical construction; the only differences being dimensional and their respective use positions.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the end members which fit telescopically onto the body of said containers.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing an embodiment of the body member.
Fig. 5 is a section taken at lines 5-5 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the structure used to lock an end member to the body member.
In the drawings, the numeral I5 indicates generally the body of the chest illustrated in Fig. 1, which body when of suitable dimensions as l5, may serve for the cabinet shown in Fig. 2. Such body members, made for instance of fibre board or other cardboard-like material, may include a each comprise a rectangular panel I8 of fibre manner in a frame of wood I9, extending from said panel as a flange from one surface and along its perimeter, whereby each end member can be mounted onto the body |5, as mentioned.
Heretofore, such ends were nailed or other- Wise pinned to the body, to complete the assembly. Erection was cumbersome, even difficult, and assembled, the structure was weak and unsturdy. To overcome these dimculties, the present invention provides novel structure to look or anchor the ends I! onto the body member I5.
Along the edge portion of one of the walls of the body member l5, which enters the end member I1, is fixed a slat 20, onto the exterior surface of such wall. The longitudinal edge of said slat 20, which is most remote from the said edge of the body member, is bevelled so that said bevelled edge and the body members exterior surface, form an acute angle.
Extending outwardly from the interior of the end member I1, along and on that side of wood frame H), which is to lie adjacent the slat-carrying wall of the body member 5, is a slat-carrying member 2| made of fibre board, which may be integral with the panel l8. When end I! is set onto the body member I5, slat 20 rests on said member 2|, very near panel l8, but said member 2| is of such dimension, that it extends beyond the bevelled edge 20 of slat 20. Along such portion of itself as extends beyond said edge 20, said member 2|, carries secured thereon a slat 22', whose bevelled edge 22, is in contact with edge 20'. Said edge 22' of slat 22, is evidently the edge thereof nearest panel l8, and the angle between said edge 22' and member 2 I, is an acute angle, which preferably is equal to the angle between bevelled edge 20' and body member I5.
In manufacture, the end members H, are fully made with member 2| and slat 22 secured thereon, as shown in Fig. 3, and the body member I5, is fully made with slats 20 secured thereon as shown in Fig. 4. The article is shipped knockdown, to be assembled by the ultimate user. For convenience and better practice, the slats 2| on the body member l5, should be on the bottom wall, when the container is a chest as Fig. 1, and On the rear wall of the bod l5 of the cabinet of Fig. 2. Space marked A should be made as small as is practical, relying more on the resilient or yielding nature of member 2|, to permit the assembly whereby the slats 20 and 22 hook one another.
To assemble, the body member is bent or set up to form as in Fig. 4. The end members I! are mounted so that the bevelled slats 20 and 22 interlock as explained. The as yet free edges'of the body member l5, are secured to the respective wood frames l 9 of the end members H, by means of nailing or suitable fasteners 23. Wood trim members 24 or 24, are mounted to lend appearance and enhance rigidity.
It is to be noted, that to get the end members I1, on or oil the body member I5, said end members need. receive a swinging movement; as if they were hinged at the hook joint.
Inclusion of a door member being optional, the remainder of the body member l5, may be deemed channel in form. Also, the entire container and its trimmings may be void of wood, and made wholly of paperboard. It is desirable for practical reasons, that slats be of Wood.
This invention is capable of numerous forms and various applications without departing from the essential features herein disclosed. It is therifore intended and desired that the specific description herein be deemdillustrative and not restrictive and that the patent shall cover all patentable'noveltyherein disclosed; reference being had to the following-claims rather than to the specific embodimentherein to indicate the scope of this invention.
The following are the claims:
1.. In a ccntainerof the character described, a paperboard body member having walls forming a channel, a separate paperboard end member, a perimetric flange angularl disposed on said end member whereby said end member is. adapted to be telescopically .set onto the body member to cover-anend'thereof, a component carried by said end member and extending beyond said flange, a
slat carried by said component, a second slat carried by the bodymernber; saidsecondslat being positioned between the first slat and the end memher when said end member covers amend. of the body member; each of said slats presenting. a bevelled edge; said slats being adapted to be set with said bevelled edges in contact with each other whereby said end member is hooked to the body. member while the end. member is in position covering said end of the body member, and d etachable therefrom by a motion'including a swinging, movement said end member with respect to the body member, and distortion of the com-i ponent; V

In a container of the character described, a paperboard body member forming of a flat blank by bending along parallel lines to form a channel 7 having flat walls, a separate paperboard end member, a perimetric flange angularly disposed on abevelled edge; said slats being adapted to be set with said bevelled edges in. contact with each other whereby said. end member is hooked to the body member while'the end member is'i-n position covering said end of the'bod y member, and-detachable therefrom by a motion including a swinging movement of said endmember with respect to the body member and distortion of the component; the plane of contact of said bevel-led edges extended, intersectingthe material of the end member. 1
