Be it known that I, MIoHAEL NEwIKLUF,a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Vienna, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria-l-Iungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Postal and other Purposes, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Austria-Hungary, dated February 2, 1889, No. 47,419 and No. 497; in France, dated December 5, 1888, No.194 581; in England, dated December 5, 1888, No. 17,771, and in Belgium, dated May 22,1889, No. 86,323,) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figures 1 and 2 are sections of my improved box, taken on the line y y of Fig. 3,the mode of applying the cover to the box being shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 00 w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an end view of the box. Figs. 5 to 9, inclusive, show by longitudinal sections slight modifications in the means provided for locking the cover to the box.
The invention relates to boxes which are more especially designed for containing light matter, such as may be transmitted through the mails-either merchandise or samples of such or other light articles-though said boxes may be used for any other desired purpose.
The object of my invention is to provide a box of light material, the cover of which may be securely fastened thereto without nailing or other usual means of fastening, and so i that the unauthorized tampering with the box may be readily detected.
To these ends the invention consists in the means for securing the cover to the box,substantially as hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, and referring more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3,inclusive,A indicates the box, which may be constructedof pasteboard, mill-board, or thin wood, and of rectangular form. Near the upper edge of the box and within the same is secured a light frame a, of wood or other suitable material, in the end bars 66 3,1161 a of which are formed holes a and a respectively, both holes having their axes in the same plane. At one end of the box a hole a is also formed in the end wall and so as to register with the hole a in frame a.
B is the cover, made of the same material as the box A and of the same size, and to the under side of said cover is secured a frame I), of such size as to snugly fit within the boxframe a, except in the direction of the length of the box, where the frame I) is shorter than the frame a. This frame I; is so secured to the-under side of the cover as that when it is in proper position to close the box the sides and one end of the frame I) will lie in contact with the corresponding sides and one end of the frame a in the box, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and to the end bars I) b of the frame I) of the cover are secured pins 1) 12 so positioned as to enter the holes a and a in the end bars a and (0'', respectively, of frame a. The pin 1) at that end of the frame 19 not in contact with the end bar 19 of frame a is longer than the pin 17 at the opposite end, so as to project into the hole a provided therefor when the cover is locked to the box A.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the cover in position for looking it to the box A, the longer pin 1) being first inserted into its hole a and the cover moved in the direction of arrow 1 until pin 13* is clear of the end bar a of the frame a, so that the cover may be moved down in the direction of arrow 2. If then the said cover is moved in the direction of arrow 3, the pin 17 will enter into its hole a and lock the cover securely, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
To the cover B is secured a sealing-flap 11 which may be of any suitable flexible material and so positioned as to cover the opening a in the box in register with hole a for the pin 1), and said flap may then be sealed to the end of the box, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. It is obvious that the box cannot be opened without breaking this seal S, as it is necessary to move the cover in the direction of arrow 1, Fig. 2, to clear thelocking-pin b of its hole a and in this motion of the box the pin 6 will break the seal S.
- The sealing-flap is preferably secured to the under side of the cover B to prevent its being tampered with, as shown.
It will of course be understood that it is not absolutely necessary that the pins 1) b be rigidly secured to the frame, as they may be detachably connected therewith, and the pin 1) may be inserted, after the box-cover is applied, through the aperture a a It will also be understood that a plurality of such pins may be employed at each end of the coverframe I), the box-frame abeing provided with a corresponding number of locking-holes.
The means for locking the cover to the box may be variously varied. For instance, the
pin or pins 19 at one end of the box may be dispensed with, the end bars a b of the two framesa and I) being constructed to form a beveled joint, as shown in Figs. 5 and (5, and the cover made to project beyond one end of the box and provided with a bar 12 having a hole I) for the pin 19, which in this case is secured to the end bar a of the box-frame a and projects through the end wall of the box A, or said pin may be-detachably secured to said box.
. As shown in Fig. 5, when the cover is moved in the direction of arrow 4 it will be locked to the box, the pin b entering the hole I) in bar 19 while the beveled face of the end bar 12 of frame I) will engage the corresponding face of the end bar a of the box-frame a, a sealing-flap 6 being provided for the hole of pin Z), and one or more like flaps may be applied to the opposite end of the cover and sealed to the box, as shown at 19 It will be seen that if the coverB is moved in the direction of arrow 5 the seal or seals S at one end will be torn off and at the other broken by the pin or pins 1).
Instead of connecting the pin or pins Z) wit-h the box-frame, they may be connected with the end bar I)", as shown in Fig. '7. The sealing flap or flaps b atthat end are or may in this case be dispensed with.
In Figs. 8 and 9 I have shown a locking ledge or flange d on the end bar b of frame I), that locks under the end bar a of the boxframe or instead of a pin, while the pin 1) is secured to the opposite end bar a of the boxframe a and locks in ahcle in the corresponding bar 6 of the cover-frame b. As shown in Fig. 8, a movement of the cover in the direction of arrow 6 will bring the locking-flange clear of the end bar a of the box-frame a, and a movement in a reverse direction, or in that of arrow 7, will lock the cover to the box, as shown in Fig. 8, which may then be sealed to said box by means of the sealingflap b 1. The combination, with a box provided at or near its upper edge with interior looking flanges or ledges, of a cover provided on its under side with similar flanges or ledges arranged relatively to the box flanges or ledges, so as to permit a slight endwise motion of said cover, and a locking pin or pins arranged relatively to the cover and box, so as to engage the locking-flanges thereof and lock the same together, or vice versa, when an endwise movement in the proper direction is imparted to the cover, as described.
2. The combination, with abox provided at or near its upper edge with interior locking flanges or ledges, of a cover provided on its under side with similar flanges or ledges, so as to permit a slight endwise motion of said cover, the flanges at one end being constructed to interlock, a locking pin or pins arranged relatively to the cover and box-flanges at the opposite end, so. as to engage said flanges and penetrate into or through a hole or holes in the end of the box, according to the position of the cover thereon, and a sealing flap or flaps connected with the cover or the box and adapted to fold over the locking-pin hole or holes, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination, with a box provided interiorly and near its upper edge with a locking-frame (1, having a hole or holes in the same plane and in its opposite end bars and a hole or holes in one end of the box registering with that or those in the corresponding frame end bar, of a cover provided with a similar frame shorter in one direction than the box-frame to permit a limited endwise motion of the cover on the box, the end bars of the cover-frame being provided with a locking pin orpins adapted to fit into the corresponding holes in the end bars of the box-frame, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4E. The combination, with a box provided interiorly and near its upper edge with a locking-frame 01, having a hole or holes in the same plane and in its opposite end bars and a hole or holes in one end of the box registering with that or those in the corresponding frame end bar, of a cover provided with a similar frame shorter in one direction than the box-frame to permit a limited endwise motion of the cover on the box, the end bars of the cover-frame being provided with a looking pin or pins adapted to fit into the corresponding holes in the end bars of the boxframe, and a sealing flap or flaps for sealing the pin opening or openings in one end of the box, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
