ORS TO SANYMETAIZ PRODUCTS COIEFANY, F CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO COSTUMER Application filed September 5, 1925.
This invention relates to improvements in costumers or hall trees.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved costumer consisting -'entirely of metal and in which the upright post is firmly and securely held in the base portion so as not to be liable to come loose or to turn or to become wholly disconnected.
More specifically, it is the object of this invention to provide a costumer of sheet metal construction with a panel post which is particularly well adapted for the positioning of the hooks at the top so as to prevent accidental turning of the same.
It is also the object of this invention to provide an improved and eificient means of securing the post to the base by the spot welding process.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a costumer construction in which an upright post is formed from a single piece of sheet metal, thereby possessing a high degree of simplicity as well as permanency of construction and also presenting a highly pleasing appearance.
Other objects will appear from the following description and claims when considered together with the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 shows our improved costumer in side elevation with portions broken away; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of several parts showing their construction and manner of assembly; Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the costumer with the base arms broken away; Fig. 4; is a sectional view takon on line 4:, Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view taken on line 55, Fig. 1;
and Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 4 6-6, of Fig. 1. i
' The base portion comprises the channel members 1 and 2 which are each formed principally of a single piece of sheet metal having the three sides, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The channel member 2 has the cut-out portions 8 at-opposite sides and midway of the length thereof, and is provided also with the opening 4 through the base of the channel at the same point with respect to the length of the channel member. The
Serial No. 54,694.
channel member 1 is formed with a cut-out portion midway of the length thereof, as indicated in Fig. 2, this cut-out ortion extending substantially half way t rough the depth of the channel member, thereby providing an opening through the middle thereof. The cut-out portion in the channel member 1 is of such form and size as to receive the channel member 2 and to provide an interlocking engagement therewith, somewhat on the order of the familiar and wellknown egg crate partition structure. That is to say, channel member 2 is nested in the cut-out portion of the channel member 1 in such a manner that the end ed es of the recess 3 will engage the outer surface of the side walls of the channel member 1, while at the same time the end edges of the cut-out portion of channel member 1 will engage the outer surface of the side walls of channel member 2, and the opening through the two channel members will be in registry so as to afford an opening through the center of the completed base.
The ends of the channel members are provided with feet which comprise the foot portions 5 of angular form, the two sides of which extend up between the side walls of the channel members and are provided also with reinforcing angular portions 6 arranged within the foot portions 5, as indicated in Fig. 1. There are provided also the end plates 7, and all of these several parts are secured together by welding. The foot portions 5 are provided with suitable knobs 5 on their lower sides forresting upon the floor.
The upright post is made up of a single piece of sheet metal and is given the particular form indicated in the drawings, although it is to be understood that it may be of any other desirable polygonal or noncircular form in cross section. In the present case, this post has the four square corner portions 8 and the intermediate panels 9, this post being closed together by means of the joint 10, as indicated in Fig. 3. EX- tending the greater part of the length of the post and within the same there is provided the channel member 11 which serves as a reinforcing means and also serves as a backing for the joint 10 which may be vvelded. The lower end of this post projects into the opening, above described as being provided at the central point of the base member, and the looking or Wedge members 12 are placed in the panel portions so as to fit tightly between the same and the side Walls of the channel members, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. All of these several parts are secured together by spot Welding to the opposite sides of members 12. They spur ends 12 serve to limit the movement of these members in assembling the same and also ensure completely closing the space at these points, thereby adding to the appearance of the structure as Well.
At the upper end of the post, the hook members 13 are positioned in the panel portions and are secured by means of screws 14 Which extend through the panel portions, and the channel member 11 as Well as the supplemental, reversely arranged short channel member 11. The channel members 11 andl l serve as a backing means for the screws 14. The cap 15 is a cast metal memher and has a neck 16 which fits tightly in the upper end of the post.
Thus We have provided a costumer which is of extremely neat and attractive appearance, it being also possible to coat the costumer With any color of finish according to the style and dress of the rest of the furniture. This costumer is also very durable since there is no danger of the post becoming loose at the base portion, this durability and dependability being made possible by the provision of the non-circular form of post which en agesin an opening of corresponding form in the base portion. Furthermore, the parts are securely held against accidental separation because of the Welding process used in securing the all-metal construction together.
The base portions of the hooks 13 which fit into the panels 9 are prevented from accidental turning, in case only a single screw lshould be used for each one, this being made possible by the engagement of the straight side edges of the base portion of the hook with the angular port-ions 8.
fThe angular portions at the corners of the post serve also to reinforce the same as Well as to enhance the artistic appearance.
Other advantages of our improved structure Will be apparent to those Who are skilled in the art.
Finally, it is to be understood that the principles of the present invention may be embodied in other and various specific forms of structure, the present disclosure being intended merely for purposes of illustration of the invention as here and now to be claimed.
channels of said posts, and securing means for said hooks, said securing means passing through the bases of said hooks, said post, and said reenforcing member, thereby securing in assembly the post, the reenforcing member and said hooks.
2. In a costumer, a one-piece sheet metal post having each of its four sides provided With a longitudinally extending channel of generally rectanglar cross dimension, a onepiece sheet metal channel shaped reenforcing member arranged Within the upper end portion of said post and having its base and its two sides engaging the bases of three of the post channels, a second one-piece sheet metal channel shapen reenforcing member. arranged Within the upper end portion of said post and having its base engaging the base of the fourth post channel and its two sides lying Within and engagingthe sides of said first mentioned reenforcing member,
clothes supporting hooks having-their bases arranged Within and fitting the channels of said post, and securing means for said hooks, said securing means passing through the bases of said hooks, said post, and said reenforcing members, thereby securing in assembly the post, the reeniorcing members and said hooks. c
In testimony whereof We hereby aflix our signatures.
