Description

April 27, 1937. G. MULLER SHEET METAL FRAME Filed Dec. 5, 1935 HHHIIII Patented Apr. 27, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in sheetmetal frames of the type more particularly adaptable for constituting the sides and end walls of a cabinet.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a sheet-metal frame of the character referred to which has advantages over the various constructions proposed heretofore in the way of simplicity, strength, cost of manufacture, and
adaptability for use as the main body part of a cabinet.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention,
5 an embodiment thereof is shown in the drawing,
in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the individual parts comprising my improved frame;
Figure 2 is a plan, assembly view of my improved frame;
Figure 3 is a plan view of a complete cabinet embodying my improved frame construction;
and
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view, the section being taken on the line 4-4 in Figure 3.
With reference to Figure 1, my improved frame comprises similar end members l0 and similar side members 12.
Each of the end members In is stamped and formed out of sheet-metal, bent to form the two flanges l4 and I6 at a right angle to each other. The flange I4 is plain, but the edge I8 of the flange I6 is bent back upon itself as shown to provide a reinforced edge.
Each of the side members 12 is also stamped and formed out of sheet metal, bent to form the two flanges 20 and 22 at a right angle to each other. The flange 20 is plain, but the edge 24 of the flange 22 is bent back upon itself as shown to provide a reinforced edge. In the side members l2, however, the reinforced edge falls short of the ends 26 of the flange 22, which ends are bent over at a right angle to the flange 22, as shown.
The members ID and 12 are assembled as shown in Figure 2 with the plain flanges M of the end members I0 spot-welded to the plain flanges 20 of the side members i2, and with the end edges of the members l0 against the flanges 22 of the side members. The ends of the reinforced edges !8 of the members ID are received and interlocked as shown in the spaces provided between the bent ends 26 and the ends of the reinforced edge 24 of the side member I2.
In using my improved frame construction, it is proposed to apply a cover thereto by hinges 28 secured to one of the side members l2, the cover comprising a wooden frame 3|] and a mirror 32. The cover is provided with a conventional snap fastener 34 which latches as shown with the reinforced edge of the opposite side member l2.
The side and end members are provided with holes 36 to receive screws 38 for securing the frame to a wall.
A conventional rack 40 may be secured to one of the side members I2 for towels and the like, in which case it is proposed to provide the end members [0 with ventilating openings 42.
It will be understood that while the shorter members IU of my improved frame construction have been designated as the end members, this has been done for convenience, and that either pair of opposite frame members may have the construction of the members Ill and the other pair of frame members have the construction of the members [2, as described. It is intended, therefore, that my claim be given the broader interpretation, in this sense.
I claim as my invention:
A frame of the character described comprising similar end members and similar side members, each of said members being stamped and formed out of sheet metal bent to form two flanges at substantially a right-angle to each other, one of the flanges being plain and the edge of the other flange being bent back upon itself to provide a reinforced edge, the reinforced edge of each of the side members falling short of the ends of the flange and said ends being bent over at substantially a right-angle to said flange, the plain flanges of said end members being secured to the plain flanges of said side members, the ends of the reinforced edges of said end members being received and interlocked between said bent ends and the ends of the reinforced edges of said side members.
