My invention relates to improvements in metal frames for screens.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved metal frame of rolled metal sections, which may be shipped in knock-down condition and which can be assembled readily.
Another object is to provide a screen so re-inforced at the corners that a very rigid structure is provided.
A further object is to provide a metal frame formed of a very small number of parts, and which is adapted to so grip the wire screen that the danger of cutting the same is reduced to a minimum.
Other objects relate to various features of construction and arrangement of parts which will become apparent from a consideration of the following specification and accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a broken perspective view of a corner of a screen embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the screen frame illustrating the corner reinforcing member in detached relation.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the lower horizontal screen frame member.
As shown, the base or frame member 10 of each of the four sides of the screen is formed of a single piece of sheet metal rolled to substantially rectangular form and having one edge folded over the other edge on the inner side of the frame member. The corner of the frame member 10, adjacent the folded over edges thereof, is shaped to form a rabbet provided with two channels 11 and 12, the former of which is somewhat deeper than the latter.
The wire screen 13 is cut to a size to overlie the channels 11 of the four base members 10, constituting the screen structure, and is forced down into the said channels and wedged therein by means of the wooden or metal filler members 14, the walls of the channels springing slightly to admit said members. A fastening strip 15, also of rolled metal, having two substantially parallel flanges 16, is then secured in position in the rabbet of each member 10, one flange 16 1926. Serial No. 117,233.
bearing upon the filler member 14, while the theedge of the wire screen will terminate between the two flanges, but if, for any reason, it is desired to anchor the wire screen in the frame structure against unusual forces, the screen may be of such size that the free edge thereof will pass under the outer flange 16 also. The base member 11 and strip 15 are suitablycorrugated to give suflicient stiffness to the members as well as to improve the appearance.
As shown in Fig. 1, the sides of the frame comprising the members 10 and 15 are mitered. To give adequate strength to the frame at the corners, I employ corner members 18, shown in detached relation in Fig. 2. Each corner member is formed of a single piece of metal and is shaped to slide snugly into the adjacent members 10, and to 11 and .12 to prevent the same from springing in the direction to loosen the screen when the strips 15 are secured in place. Euitable screws pass through the strips 15 and through the underlying portions of members 10 and 18 to secure the two first mentioned members to the latter at the corners of the frame structure.
The base members 10, each being formed of a single strip of rolled metal, suitably corrugated and reinforced at the corners, provide a very substantial screen frame, while the filler members 14 which are held in the channels 11 do not cut the wire screen. It will be noticed that the edges of the members 10 over which the screen is drawn are rounded by folding one edge of the member Although I have shown one embodiment of my invention for the purpose of illustration, it will be apparent that various changes may be made therein without departing from the "scope of the appended claim.
\Vhat I claim is:
A hollow screen frame member formed of a single strip of sheet metal having a back and a face portion, the face having a portion thereof extended rearwardly into contact with the back portion, said contacting portions being extended in a direction toward the plane of the face and being spaced from said rearwardl extending face portion to form a channel, t 1e free edge of the back portion being bent over'the'free edge of the other contacting portion and forming a ledge in said channel, said face having a second channel arallel to said first channel, a screen clot retaining member having flanges adapted to be inserted one in each of said channels, the flange in said first mentioned channel cooperating With said ledge for retaining thefcloth in position, and means for securing said retaining member to said frame member.
