Description

J- C MILLER Aug. 2, 1932.
METAL CORNER Filed April 10, 1931 ATTORNEYS ain JOHN QMILLER, or LAKEWOOD, OHIO METAL CORNER Application filed April 10,
4 This. invention relates to metal corners or braces especially adapted for firmly securing together the joining members of frames for window or door screens and other similar frames and has for the primary object, the.
provision of a device of the above stated character which may be easily and cheaply stamped from a suitable metal blank, thereby reducing the cost of manufacture over braces for similar purposes and which will provide a device when applied to the members of a frame which will firmly hold said members in proper relation even when subjected to severe strains and also obviate the customary use of dowels, screws and like fasteners now employed in frame construction.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a metal corner or brace of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and efficient and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
lVith these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. I
For a complete understanding of my inven tion, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a metal corner or brace applied to a fragmentary portion of a frame.
Figure 2 is a perspective view illustrating he device removed from a frame.
Figure 3 is a planview illustrating the application of the metal corners or braces to a window or door screen frame.
Figure A is a fragmentary sectional View 7 illustrating the means of securing the metal corner or brace to the frame.
Referring in detail to the drawing, rthe numeral 1 indicates an elongated body of U substantially U-shape in cross section providing the parallel plates 2 connected by a web or bight portion 3, a portion of which is free from the side plates 2 and bent at right angles to form an attaching tongue 4: which has its free end rounded and apertured as shown at 5. The corners of the plates 2 are apert'uresb and 7 1931. 1 Serial No. 529,196.
slightly. rounded with the edges thereof curved'inwardly .to form beads or flanges 6. The side plates are provided with a series of apertures 17 and also sitely disposed slots 8.
As shown in Figure 1, the body 1 is applied to members A and B so that the side plates Zengage opposite faces of the members A'and B and extend acrossthe joint between said members A and B. The bight portion 3 engages one of the edge faces of the member A while the tongue 4: engages a corresponding face of the memberrB'. Tacks, nails and similar fasteners may be employed for securing the body to the members A and B by driving the fasteners 9 through the members A'and B. 1
The body when applied to the shown in Figure 3 will not interfere with the securing of the wire meshlO and beading 11 to the frame as the fasteners 12 which pass throughthe beading and wire mesh may pass through the bodies 1 by way ofthe slots 8.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
it Will be noted that metal corners or braces constructed 1n accordance with the foregoing will eifectively secure and reinforce the members of a frame where said members join with each other thereby obviating the customary practice of joining such members by means of screws,- dowel pins and the like. The frame capable of withstanding severe strains and said devices will not interfere with the securing of the wire mesh and heading to the frame;
provided with oppoiiito the material of the.
PATENT; orFicE frame as 7 when secured together with my invention is While I have shown and described the v I preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: v
1. A corner brace andan attaching means comprising an elongated body for securing the adjacent ends of right angularly disposed members and of substantially U-shape in cross section providing parallel side plates and a Web portion connecting said side plates approximately one half of their length, said side plates engaging opposite faces of the members and said Web portion engaging one edge of one of the members and bent to form a right angularly disposed tongue engaging the other member, said tongue and plate having apertures to receive fasteners for securing the plates and tongues to the respective members.
2. A corner brace and an attaching means comprisin an elongated body for securing the adjacent ends of rig htangularly disposed members and of substantially U-shape in cross section providing parallel side plates and a Web portionconnecting said side plates approximately one half of their length, said side plates engaging opposite faces of the members and said Web portion engaging one edge of one of the members and bent to form a rightangularly disposed tongue engaging the other member, said tongue and plate having apertures to receive fasteners for securing the plate and tongues to the respective members, said plates having slots to permit fasteners ofbeading strips to extend there- .through into the rightangularly disposed members. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN C. MILLER.
