CORNER HOLDER FOR FRAMES. APPLICATION- man APR. 12, 1919.

JOHN M. RICI-IENS, or JACKSONVILLE, Fromm.
CORNER-HOLDER FOR FRAMES.
it Specification of Letters I at Patented llIEtl. 23, 1920.
Application filed April 12, 1919. Serial No. 289,588.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. RICIIENS, citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner-Holders for Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to corner holders for frames, and is designed more particularly as an improvement upon the corner holder constituting the subject of my Letters Patent No. 1,209,032, bearing date of December 19, 1916.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a corner holder that is a mate rial simplification of those extant and is otherwise materially advantageous because of the small amount of metal that it embodies and the facility with which it may be secured in finished manner in a miter or a butt joint, without offering any projection whatever at the outer or inner edges of the joint, and without the employment of nails or other fasteners at the sides of the frame.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the corner holder and in the combinations hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure 1. is a side elevation of a miter joint in which a corner holder of my invention is employed.
Fig. 2 is a plan of one outer edge thereof.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the other outer edge of the joint.
Fig. 4' is a perspective of the corner holder for miter joints per 86.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a butt joint constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 6 is a perspective of one of the holders that enter into said joint.
Fig. 7 is a perspective of the other holder of the butt joint.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in Figs. 1 to 4L to which reference will first be had.
In furtherance of my invention, the members 1 and 2 of the miter joint are provided in their outer edges with kerfs 3 which form continuations of each other and have their inner walls alined, as indicated by the dotted line i in Fig. 1.
Arranged in the said kerfs 3 and fully occupying the same is the body plate 5 of my novel corner holder which may be and preferably is formed of sheet metal. At its outer edges which are disposed at right angles to each other the body plate 5 is provided with alternate, oppositely disposed and preferably apertured ears 6 which are adapted when the body plate is positioned as shown in Fig. 1 to be connected to the outer edges of the members 1 and 2 through the medium of nails 7 or other suitable fasteners driven through the ears and into the said edges, as illustrated.
Manifestly when applied and connected in the manner set forth, my novel holder will strongly tie the members 1 and 2 together and will tend to maintain the same in right angle relation, and this notwitln standing the fact that the sides of the said members 1 and 2 are perfectly free of fasteners or portions of the holder. From this it follows that in addition to enhancing the finished appearance of the joint, the arrangement of the holder is materially advantageous because the metal is to a large extent protected against the weather which is conducive to the durability of the construction as a whole.
In the butt joint embodiment of Figs. 5 to 7 the members 1 and 2 are arranged at right angles but with the end of one abutting againstthe inner side edge of the other. Forn'ied in the inner edges of said members 1 and 2 are alinedkerfs 3 and formed in the outer edge of the member 1 andthe flush end of the member 2 are alined kerfs 3 The kerfs 8 are provided for the reception of the body plate 5 of the inner butt joint holder shown in Fig. 6, while the kerfs 3 serve to receive the body plate 5 of the outer butt-joint holder shown in Fig. 7. Each of the said body plates 5 5 is provided 011 its exposed edge with alternating oppositely disposed and preferably apertured ears 6 which are designed for arrangement snug against the edges of the members 1 and 2 and for the reception of nails or analogous fasteners 7 which are I driven into the edges of the members l 2 in order to strongly connect the holders to said members without the display of any metal whatever at the sides of the members.
It will be readily apparent that when arranged as shown relative to each other and the wooden members 1 2 the inner and outer metallic holders will strongly tie the members 1 and 2* together and maintain them at right angles to each other.
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: v s
A corner holder for frames, comprising a fiat plate having its inner edge plain for insertion in kerfs formed in the ends of the frame members, said flat plate being provided upon its outer edge With sets of spaced apertured ears arranged at substan tially a right angle to the plate upon opposite sides thereof, the ears in one set being alternately arranged with relation to the ears in the other set.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN M. RICHENS. Witnesses CHARLES A. Pownns, NORA BECKER.
