his invention relates to furniture, and it is an object of the invention to provide an article of this kind which may be shipped knock-down direct to the consumer, and wherein the furniture is so constructed as to be readily assembled by the consumer without requiring any particular 7 skill.

The invention also has for an object to provide an article of this kind which can be readily assembled with a minimum amount of labor, and wherein the assembled article of furniture embodies a very sturdy construction.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved furniture whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary View, in perspective, of the front frame of an article of furniture and an associated side wall structure;

Figure 2 is a fragmentary view, in perspective, somewhat similar to Figure l but showing the back panel applied;

Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary View, in perspective, of the front frame;

Figure 4 is a View, in perspective, of the complete article of furniture;

Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary View, partly in section and partly in elevation, illustrating the connection of a cross member of the front frame with one of the side members of said front frame and also the connection between the side member of the front frame and one of the transverse members of a side panel, said last named connection or joint being separated; and

Figure 6 is a fragmentary view, partly in section and partly in elevation, somewhat similar to Figure 5 but showing closed the joint or connection between a side member of the front frame and the transverse member of a side panel.

As illustrated in the accompanying drawings the article of furniture is of a type generally known as a drawer chest. The drawers, however, form no part of the invention and are, therefore, omitted. As illustrated in the accompanying drawings F denotes a front frame comprising side members or stiles I and cross members 2 and also a bottom cross sill or apron 3. The space between adjacent cross members 2 and the space between the bottom cross member 2 and the sill or apron 3 provide the desired openings through which a drawer is to be inserted. The sill or apron 3 may also be termed a bar.

Each of the side members I of the frame has its inner face fiat and. of a width materially in excess of the thickness of the cross members 2 and the sill or apron 3 with the outer face of each of the cross members and the sill or apron 3 substantially flush with the outer or front face of the side member I. The cross members 2 and the sill or member 3, as herein disclosed, are connected or secured to each of the side members I by a conventional mortise and tenon joint 4.

It is believed to be clearly apparent that the members I, 2 and 3 may be shipped readily in knock-down form and that the same may be quickly and properly assembled by the consumer Without requiring any particular skill. The outer side face of each of the side members I of the front frame F is provided therealong, at its rear marginal portion, with a relatively deep rabbet 5, the inner or bottom wall a being arranged on a predetermined and transversely disposed incline with the low point of such incline being at the rear face of the side member I.

Each of the side panels S is of required dimen sions and suitably secured to the inner side face of each of the panels S are the transverse members 6 suitably spaced apart lengthwise of the panel S. The member 6 at the top end of the panel has a flat face flush with the adjacent top edge of the panel, while the remaining members 6, except the bottom, are positioned upon the panel S for proper coaction with the drawer openings of the front frame F. In the present embodiment of the invention the bottom transverse member 6 has a fiat face flush with the bottom edge of the panel S. These members 6 are formed to provide the usual drawer slides and each of the members 6, at its rear end, terminates a slight distance inwardly from the adjacent rear longitudinal margin of the panel S.

The front end of each of the members 6 also terminates a slight distance inwardly of the adjacent forward longitudinal margin of the panel S. The main or body portion of each of the members 6 is of a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of the associated side member or stile I, and with the outer face thereof substantially flush with the low point of the wall a of the rabbet 5. Each of these members 6 along a longitudinal marginal portion thereof is provided with an inwardly disposed flange or bead I which has its forward end portion extended, as at 8, beyond the adjacent end of the main or body portion of the member 6. This extended portion 8 in the assembly of the article overlies and has close contact with the inner side face of a member or stile l and is anchored thereto by a nail 9 or other suitable fastening element. The members 6 are preferably glued to a side panel S, although any other means desired may be employed for maintaining the members 6 in a fixed position upon the panel S.

When a side panel is placed in position with respect to a side member or stile l of the front panel the forwardly extending marginal portion Ill of the panel S will contact the inclined base or inner wall a, the resultant wedging action,

causing the extended portions 8 to tightly bear against the inner side face of the side member I. This assures a tight locking engagement between the side panel S and the front frame F and which connection is maintained by the nails 9 or other fastening elements which are directed through the extensions 8 of the members 6 into the side member or stile I. This interlocking of a side panel S with a member or stile l of the front frame F is further facilitated by having the extension 8 of each of the members 6 of a length to extend a material distance beyond the outer margin of the forwardly extended portion ID of the panel S. The back panel B is of a length to extend, when applied, from the lower end of the panels S to a point beyond the upper end of said panels substantially equal to the thickness of the applied top panel T. The applied back panel B is secured by th nails 9 l or the like to the rear ends of the transverse members 6 although, of course, any other means desired may be employed.

The article of furniture as herein comprised is intended to be shipped knock-down to the consumer accompanied, of course, with the necessary instructions as to the manner of assembling the parts. In such assembling, the frame front F is preferably placed face down on the floor or bench and the side panels S applied thereto. After the side panels S have been applied the back panel is placed upon the rear ends of the members 6, and after which, the top panel T is applied. Nails, screws, or kindred fastening devices are disposed through the upper extended portion 12 of the applied back panel B and also to secure the applied top panel T to the top cross members 6 and the top member 2 of the frame F. It is to be stated at this time, however, that the manner of securing the back panel B and the top panel T in place forms no particular part of the present invention.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a piece of furniture constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.

I claim:

1. In combination, a side member provided along an outer side 'face with a rabbet, a panel associated with said member, cross members carried by the inner face of the panel, said cross members terminating inwardly of a margin of the panel to provide an extended portion of the panel to be received within the rabbet of the member, each of said cross members being provided with a forward extension to overlie the inner face of the member, and means for securing the extension of each cross member to the first-named member, the extension of each of the cross members being of a length to terminate beyond the extended margin of the panel.

2. In combination, a side member provided along an outer side face with a rabbet, a panel associated with said member, cross members car ried by the inner face of the panel, said cross members terminating inwardly of a margin of the panel, to provide an extended portion of the panel to be received within the rabbet of the member, each of said cross members being provided with a forward extension to overlie the inner face of the member, and means for securing the extension of each cross member to the first-named member, the extension of each of the cross members being of a length to terminate beyond the extended margin of the panel, the base wall of the rabbet of the first member being transversely inclined with its low point to the rear, the extended marginal portion of the panel contacting with said base wall when the panel is applied.
