SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,161, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed October 1383, (no model.)
1'0 all whom it 112,561! concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY D. STIMSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Haddonfield, Camden county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
- The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and convenient means of securely fastening the end flaps of a paper box; and this object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1, 2, and 3 are perspective views of the end of a paper box, illustrating the means employed for fastening the flaps in accordance with my invention.
A is the body of the box, and a, b, d, andf the flaps which close the end of the same, a and I) being the inner and (Z and f the outer flaps.
B is the securing'strip, which forms the subject of my invention, and which may consist of thin flexible sheet metal, or of wire, this strip being applied in the following manner: The first two flaps, a and b, are folded down, as usual, and the strip is then laid thereon, so that its ends will project on each side of the box, as shown inFig. 1; Theilaps d and f are then folded down in succession, Figs. 2 and 3, and the fastening is completed by turning the projecting ends of the strip over the edges of the outer flaps, d and f, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to securely lock said flaps together. If desired, the strip 13 may be secured to the flap d or to the flap bin any suitable manner, so as to prevent it from shifting laterally.
When the box is intended for containing material which is not in powdered or granular form, the inner flaps, a and b, may, if desired, be dispensed with, the flaps d and f, retained by the strip B, forming the means of closing the end of the box. 1
I claim as my invention The combination of the end flaps, d and f, of apaper box with the retaining-strip B, placed beneath said flaps, and having its opposite ends bent over the opposite edges of the flaps, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY D. STIMSON.
