IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,395, dated April 15, 1879; applicationfiled December 19, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAV L. J AEGER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes of Paper or other Material, which improvement is fully set forth. in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my box. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in the plane mm, Fig. 2. Fig. 4is an inside view of the closingflap. Fig. 5 is a plan of the blank. Fig. 6 is a section. Fig. 7 is a plan view of a modification of the closing-flap.

This invention is designed to improve upon that class of boxes which are formed from an oblong blank having a tag at one end and a slit at the other end for receiving said tag, said blank being usually cut or scored in lines oblique to the parallel sides thereof and to each other, forming a zigzag line lengthwise of the blank, indicating the manner in which {)he blank should be folded or bent to form a My invention consists in providing such boxes with notches at its corners, and also the lid with notches on its edges, and combining therewith an elastic strap, which is made to extend across the sides of the box and to lie in and connect with said notches in such a manner that the sides will be held together, and the lid provided with a closing spring.

In the drawings, the letterA designates my hexahedral box, which is formed of a blank, B, Fig. 5, which is scored so as to form six isosceles triangles, G D E F G H, and a closing-flap, I. This blank is folded so as to bring the edge a into the crease b, the edge 0 against the edge d, the edge 6 against the edge f, and the edge g against the edge h.

In the triangle D is a slit, 73, adapted to receive the closing-flap I, (see Figs. 1, 2, and 3,) and in the closing-flap is a hole, j, the outer straight edge of which is depressed to form a lip, k, so that when the closing-flap is forced into the slit a said lip will catch against the lower edge, I, of the slit i, (see Fig, 3,) and thereby the closing-flap will be locked.

The same efi'ect is produced by providing the triangle D with a double slit or strap, 3,

and forming on the closing-flap I a raised lip, is", (see Figs. 6 and 7,) so that by passing the closing-flap through beneath the strap 6 the lip k catches against the outer edge of this strap, (see Fig. 6,) and thereby said closing-flap is locked.

The triangle 0 forms the cover of my box, and, if desired, this triangle may be provided with an additional closing-flap, 1*, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5, and when the blank is folded as above described the cover 0 will be retained in its closed position by passing said additional closing-flap into a slit, m, in the triangle G. In practice, however, I prefer to dispense with this additional closing-flap, and I retain the coverO in its closed position by an elastic strap, n, which is hooked into a notch, 0, in the edges 0 d, (see Figs. 2 and 5,) and extends over the triangles E F 011 one and over the triangles H G on the opposite side, and over the cover 0, being retained in notches p q, formed in the edges of said cover. By this elastic strap the box is held together, and the cover is retained in its closed position; but, if desired, the cover can be turned open against the action of said elastic strap, so that the contents, of the box can be reached, and when the cover is released it closes automatically by the action of the clastic strap.

It is obvious that the boxes, as above described, may be made of material other than paper, such as splints or veneers lined with paper, or without such lining.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, With the box having the notches 0 at its corners, and the lid having the notches p q in its edges, of the elastic strap at, extending across the sides and lid of the box, and lying in said notches, whereby the sides are held together and the lid is provided with a closing spring, substantially as described.
