PAPER VESSEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nee. so, 1913.
Application filed May 3, 1911. Serial No..624,717.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. BLooirEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Paper Vessel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper vessels, and has for its object to provide a novel folded paper vessel and closure arrangement therefor.
This invention resides essentially in a folded paper vessel comprising a bottom a plurality of sides and corner portions folded over opposite sides and extending above the said sides, cover flaps attached to said opposite sides and arranged to overlap each other, the outer cover flap being provided with a tab foldable against the upper ends of the opposite corner portions, and a tongue secured to one of the last mentioned corner portions which is adapted to be bent over and around the said tab to secure the cover flaps in position.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters indicate similar parts, and wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is formed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the completed vessel with the cover flaps open. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the vessel when closed. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the vessel is constructed from a paper blank, which may as well be other material, and is scored and folded to provide the bottom 1, four flat or uncreased sides 2, the corner portions 3, 4:, 5 and 6 foldable over opposite sides 2 and which extend above the said sides and overlap each other, two inner cover flaps 7 and 8 attached to opposite sides 2, and two outer cover flaps 9 and 10 attached to the other opposite sides over which the corner portions are folded.
A tab 11 projects from one of the corners of the outermost cover flap 9 and is arranged to fold against the upper ends of the opposite corner portions 3 and 6 upon the vessel being closed. A metallic tongue 12 is clenched or otherwise secured to the outermost corner portion 3 and is adapted to be bent over and around the tab 11 when the vessel is closed, thus securing the cover flaps in position.
In this manner the flap 9 is foldable over the flap 10 to overlap same and the tab 11 is arranged to fold against the upper ends of the corner portions 3 and 6 to permit the 3 and 6 and on the corresponding side, the
tab 11 lying against the said corner portions at one side of the center inasmuch as the said tab is attached to one corner of the closure flap 9. The free end of the closure flap 9 in fitting against the folded corner portions 3 and 6 will rest on the upper edge of the corresponding side so that the said closure flap may not be accidentally depressed into the vessel, and at the same time, thesaid side in not projecting above the cover line will permit the ends of the bail to be passed through the respective corner portions above the cover line and above the closure flap 9. This is of advantage for the reason that the ends of the bail do not project into the vessel proper and are therefore kept out of contact with the contentsof the vessel at all times. Inasmuch as the ends of the bails are hooked through the respective overlapped corner portions above the cover line and above the closure flap 9, it is essential that the tab 11 should lie at one side of the center, so that the corresponding end of the bail may swing free and'unencumbered to one side, or the side opposite the tab. The tab also preferably has its inner end cut on a diagonal line radial to the point in the corresponding corner portions 3 and 6 through which the end of the bail passes, in order that when the bail is swung toward the side having the tab 11, the end of the bail will flatly strike the inner end of the tab thus preventing the tab from being torn, as would otherwise probably result. The end of the bail therefore, is prevented from interfering with the tab 11 as the bail is swung toward the other side.
What is claimed as new is A folded paper vessel having a cover flap attached to one side thereof and having overlapped corner portions over the said side and the opposite side and extending above the sides, the free edge of the said flap being adapted to fit against the corner portions on the latter side and having a tab at one corner to lie against the latter corner portions at one side of the center, a metallic tongue rising from the latter corner portions to be bent over the tab, and a bail having its ends hooked inwardly through the respective overlapped portions above the cover line, the said tab having its inner end cut diagonally so as to be on a radial line with the pivotal point of the end of the bail when the closure flap is closed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
