PACKING-BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,671, dated December 11, 1894. Application filed Aprll5,1394- Serial No. 506,481. (ITo model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LEOPOLD WEISS, a citizen of Austria-Hungary, residing in the city, county,'and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of boxes having sliding-lids, and its object is to provide a simple and cheap box especially adapted for expressing or mailing samples of merchandise, as well as for other purposes.

The invention consists of a packing-box having a body provided at its rear end with inner corner-pieces adapted to engage inrecesses in the rear corners of the lid, said boxbody and lid being provided at their front ends with a fastening device, and the invention consists of certain other novel features of construction to be hereinafter described and then particularly claimed.

In the accompanying drawings-Figure l is a perspective view showing the lid raised ofi from the body of the box. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the rear end of the closed box, taken on the lines 2-2, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are broken detail views of the fastening device.

Referring to the drawings, the body of the box is indicated byletter A and the lid by B. The box-body A is constructed of stiff pasteboard or other suitable material and is strengthened .by an internal rectangular frame, consisting of side-strips G and endstrips 0. This internal frame is secured in the upper part of the body A and its upper surface is flush with the top edge of the body. Arranged in the rear corners of the body A are corner-pieces D consisting of wire staples which are driven into the respective contiguous ends of side-strips C and the end-strips O at the rear of the frame, so as to extend diagonally across said corners, at the open top of the body.

The lid B consists of a cover-part b which may be of paste-board or other suitable material and is a little larger than the area between, the side and end-walls of the body A so asto entirely close the body when placed thereon.

Secured to the under-side of the coverpart b of the lid is a rectangular frame E which is a little smaller than the interior of the frame 0, C, of the body, so that it may fit snugly therein. The two rear corners of the frame E are cut away to form diagonal recesses e which, when the lid is placed on the body A,

as shown in Fig. 2, receive the corner-pieces D, and thereby prevent the raising of the lid from the body, when said parts are properly fastened at their front ends.

The means for fastening the lid to the body consists of a staple F driven into the front end-strip C of the body-frame and forming an eye which projects through a notch b in the front end of the cover-part b of the lid, said eye receiving the hook-end of a catch G pivoted on a pin g passing through two-ply portions of the cover-part, as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. A perforation his made in the hook-end of the catch for the fastening of a cord H thereto, whereby when a suitable seal is applied the box maybe securely closed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a box-body provided with corner-pieces at one end, of a lid comprising a cover-part and a frame secured to the latter, said frame having corner-recesses adapted to receive said corner-pieces, and means for securing the other ends of the body and lid, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a box-body having an internal strengthening-frame, and di- I agonal wires in the rear corners of said frame, of a lid comprising a cover-part and a frame secured to the under side thereof and adapted to fit within the body-frame, said lid-frame having corner recesses. adapted to receive said corner-pieces, and a fastening device for securing the lid to the body, substantially as set forth.
