ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES EEIcE.
PATENT PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,403, dated October 10, 1893. Application iiled December 30, 1392. Serial No. 456.773- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN GEORGE JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gordon, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is an improved box made from a single blank and designed to be used as a combined match box and safe.
The object of the invention is to provide a box made from a blank of such form that it may readily be folded into the required form and filled with matches at the factory or place of manufacture and placed in condition for shipment, and which,in the hands of the pur-. chaser or user, may serve the purpose of a safe or receptacle which is readily accessible and of convenient size and shape.
The extreme simplicity of the invention reduces the cost to a minimum while at the same time a neat and effective article is produced.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a plan View of the blank from which the box is made. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the box packed ready for shipment. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the box with the lid or lip open as seen when in use, and Fig. 4 is a rear view.
Referring more particularly to these drawings by letter, A designates the bottom or back of the box, and C, and C, the sides, which are, as shown, provided with the end flaps or projections c, and c. the blank A, is an end portion D, adapted to form the end Wall of the box, and each of these end pieces is provided with transverse slits d, into which the flaps c, and 0, project, when the sides and ends are folded into a perpendicular position, and thus hold the parts together. The side piece 0, carries the top or front piece E, which is adapted to cover approximately two-thirds of the length of the box, and flaps e, and e are provided upon two At each end of i of the free edges of this top or front piece which, when the box is properly folded, lie in contact with the side and end adjoining and aid in strengthening the box. As the top or front portion E, does not, when folded over, extend over the whole top of the box there is a space left between its free edge and the end of the box, this space being adapted to permit access to the interior of the box when it is used as a safe. The said space is inclosed by the supplemental portion F, carried by the edge of the end portion, the pointcof connection between the end'portion and this portion F, being preferably strengthened by suitable Flaps G, are formed upon the supplemental portion F, one upon each end thereof, each provided with a tongue or projection g, which engages a slit h, in the flap H. The outer corners or edges of the end pieces D, are provided he moistened when the box is made up, as also are the corners of the flap H, and any other points where it is found necessary or desirable, so that when the box is folded the adhesive material will aid in holding it firmly in shape.
When the box is folded and ready to be filled at the factory the side piece and the end pieces D, stand in planes perpendicular to the plane of the back A, and the portion E, is
the end piece D. The flaps G, and H, of the supplemental cover F, are folded at right angles to the said cover, with the tongues g,entering the corresponding slits h, and this, together with the adhesive material, binds the parts together. The supplemental cover or lid is then folded over until its edge contacts with the edge of the main front portion E, forming a continuous front. A tongue or pro jeotion I, formed upon or secured to the edge material, is adapted to connect the edges of the portions E, and F, as shown. The side 0' is left open until the box is filled, and then this too is folded up against the downwardly turned flap e which has its outer face covered with adhesive material, and the tongues 0' enter the slits d, and the box is completely closed and in this condition is ready to be flexible material and adapted to act as a hinge.
with a suitable adhesive material adapted to folded across with its flap e, in proximity to of the portion E, and provided with adhesive shipped from the manufacturer to the retailer or user. In the bottom or back A, near the upper end thereof,or the end opposite the lid F, I provide a small opening as shown at K, by means of which the box may be hung upon a nail against the wall or in similar position convenient for use. When it is to be opened the tongue or projection I is broken and this allows the supplemental cover or lid to be dropped down or opened as shown in Fig. 3, in which position ready access may be had to the contents of the box, as the lid will act as a tray into which the said contents will drop as fast as those contained therein are used up.
The outer face of the back A is left blank for the address of the party to whom the box is sent, while the remaining sides may be utilized for advertising matter, and a portion of one side may be roughened to provide a surface against which matches may be scratched.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A paper box, consisting of the main portion, the upper and lower contiguous flaps having slits, the top supplemental portion integral with the upper flap having the tongues and flap provided with slits, the side flaps secured to the main portion and having the tongues, the side supplemental portion secured to one of the side flaps and having the tongue and the upper and lower flaps, as shown.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in 7 presence of two witnesses.
