SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,244, dated January 18, 1887. Y
Application filed December'l, 18'86. Serial'No. 221,652. (No model.)
To al whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM Hanson EMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new `and useful Improvements in Packages for Cigarettes, Cigars, and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to boxes or cases to retain cigarettes, cigars, and other similar arti cles, and enable them to be safely carried in the pocket; and the object thereof is to provide a simple, convenient, and comparatively inexpensive device for this purpose which shall be normally retained in and automatically restored to a closed condition.
The invention consists in the several novel features of construction and combinations of parts, fully set forth hereinafter, and definitely pointed out in the claims following this specitication.
Referring to t-he drawings, Figure I is a perspective view showing the bcx or case opened. Fig. 2 is a sectional View showing the parts enlarged and illustrating the box or case closed.
In the said drawings, the reference-num eral l designates the outer portion of the box or casing, which is formed of paper, cardboard, wood, artificial leather, or any other suitable material. It is of rectangular form, and two of its edges are removed or left open to permit the insertion of the inner portion.
NVithin the outer casing, 1, isarranged the inner package, 2, which is also rectangular in f orm and of similar size to the outer case, save that its thickness is such as to permit it to be inserted witliin the casing l without crowding. The package 2 is open at its top to permit' the insertion ot' cigarettes, cigars, or other articles, and the upper edges of the sides may, if desired, bc slightly trimmed off, as shown, to permit of the ready withdrawal of the contents.
The package 2 is connected with the outer casing by a exible strip, 3, which may or may not form part of either or both of the connected portions. In other words, the strip 3 may form part of the bottom wall of the inner package, 2, and the rear wall of the outer casmay be readily turned into and out` of the4 outer casing. I
Surrounding the inner package and connected to the rear wall of the outer casing is an elastic strip,5l whereby the parts are normally drawn into and retained inthe posit-ion shown in Fig. 2. This spring may be arranged at any suitable point above the bottom of the box; but I prefer to place it at or a little below the central portion, as shown. v It may be external to the outer easing, as in Fig. 1, orit may be Within it, without departing from my invention.
Heretofcre a box has been used composed of two parts, one pivotedwithin the other, and thrown inbyaleaf-spring bearing against its lower interior angle. In this device the lower opposite angles of the two parts are prolonged to extend them below the point Where the springpressurc is exerted, to permit a hand-hold pressure on these opposite angles being employed to open the case.
By myinvention I provide asimple, strong, inexpensive package, of rectangular form, having no projecting angles to catch in the clothing or crush and break up by use. I may put a tag, 6, upon the top of the inner package to facilitate its removal.
It is evident that the device may be used vfor matches and other articles, though it is flexible strip, and an elastic cord or tape,v
whereby the inner box is drawn into and retained within the outer casing, substantially as described.
2. A package or box for cigarettes, consisting of an douterrectangular casing open on one side andv one end, a similarly-shaped inner IOO box, open :it its top, connected with the outer hinge-connection at the point 4, and the elascasing by@ iexble strip, and an elastic-'cord or tic cord or tape 5, arranged at a point not far tape surrounding the inner package and sefrorin the central portion 0f the device, snbcured to the rear edge of the outer casing, substantially as described.
stantially as described. In testimony whereof I aix my signature in I5 3. IThe combination, with the rectangular presence of two Witnesses. outer casing', 1, open 011 one Side and one end, of the inner box or package, 2, of similar shape, the exiblc strip 3, passing around the 1o lower inner angle of the part 2 and making a WILLIAM HANSON EMERY. Witnesses:
J ORN D. LITTLE, FRANK W. EMERY.
