ANDERS J. RASA'NEN, or NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 19, 1909.
Application led March 22, 1909. Serial No. 485,035.
To all whom. it may concern: l
Be it known that I, ANDERS J. RSNEN a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pencil- Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part Of this speciication, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a perspective view of a pencil sharpener constructed in accordance with my invention, and shown in closed position. Fig. a top or plan view of the same with the cover open. Fig. 3 a perspective view of one end of the Sharpener showing the cover open and the drawer withdrawn. Fig. 4 a transverse sectional view with the cover open. Fig. a longitudinal sectional view showing one end of the device, and means for securing the drawer.
This invention relates to an improvement in pencil Sharpeners and particularly to those in which a roll is employed, the roll being covered with sand paper or other abrading material.
The object of the invention is a simple arrangementfor mounting the roll with provision for holding the dust, and a convenient receptacle for pencils; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying ont my invention I employ a box 2 of metal or other suitable material having upwardly extending rounded ends 3, 4. and a bowed cover 5 to set over the said ends. The edges 6 and 7 of the sides of the box are turned inward and downward forming flanges over a chamber 8 formed by a false bottom or partition 9. The roll 10 is formed from wood or other suitable material and connected with the ends by screws 1,1 so as to freely turn. This roll is covered with sand paper or coated with similar abrading material, and is preferably formed with two square corners 12 and 13, and two round corners 14 and l5, and the surface 16 between the corners 14 and 15 is preferably rounded. At one end the sides of the box project slightly beyond the end and arranged outside of the end and parallel therewith is a slide 17. This slide corresponds in shape to the shape of the end and is formed with slots 18 and 19. The screw 11 passes through the slot 18 and a headed stud 20 passes through t-he slot 19 so that the slide may be raised. In the lower part of the box between the partition 9 and the bottom 2l is a drawer 22 which is adapted to contain pencils. When this drawer is closed the slide 17 passes over its outer end so as to hold the drawer in its closed position, and this slide is held down by the cover 5.
In use the roll is turned to present the desired surface and pencils are sharpened on this surface in the usual manner. The dust dropping onto the Hang-es 6 and 7 enters the chamber 8 and is thereby retained until it is desired to shake it out by inverting the box. Pencils are carried in the drawer, and this drawer is readily opened by lifting the slide, and when closed is heldv secure by the cover.
I claim 1. A pencil Sharpener comprising a box, the upper edges of the sides of which are turned inward and downward, the ends of the boX extending above the sides, a cover hinged to one side and adapted to fold over the ends, and an abrading roll mounted between the ends.
2. A pencil Sharpener comprising a box, a partition above the bottom, the sides of the box turned inward and downward, the ends of the box ext-ending above the sides, a cover hinged to one side and adapted to fold over the ends, an abrading roll mounted between the ends, a drawer between the partition and bottom, a slide connected with one of the ends and adapted to be raised above said drawer, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDERS J. RASANEN.
