SOLOMON W. MENDEL, OF BRADDOCK, PENNSYLVANIA.
BLACKING BOX AND BRUSH CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, 1910.
Application filed May 7, 1909. Serial No. 494,613.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SoLoMoN WV. MENDEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking Box and Brush Cases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to blacking box and brush cases.
Paramount objects of the invention are, to provide the body or handle of the brush with a compartment for shielding the bristles or polishing surface of the brush when the same is not in use; to afford means in connection with a brush for holding a can of paste or polishing material and a dauber and to furnish means whereby the parts of the brush can be easily and quickly placed in an operative. position.
The other objects of the invention are to provide a simple and inexpensive device of the above character that can be advantageously used by travelers; to design and construct the parts so as to give the requisite strength and durability without un usual increase in weight and dimensions, and to provide a brush body that can be provided with bristles, or other polishing material.
I accomplish the above and other important objects by the mechanical construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device in a closed position, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, partly broken away and partly in longitudinal section, illustrating the brush in an open position, Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation of the box and brush, the box being partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 4; is a view in elevation of the opposite end of the box and brush.
In the drawings, I have illustrated a casing comprisin a bottom plate 1, end walls 2 and 3 and side walls 4 and 5, these walls being preferably made integral by making the body of wood or of stamped metal. The arrangement of the walls provides an oblong compartment 6 in which a can, boX or receptacle 7 for paste or polishing material can be placed, also a small dauber or paste ap- I plying tool 8.
9 designates an oblong plate constituting a brush back and a lid for the casing and having the edges thereof cut away to provide a depending portion 10 adapted when the brush is in the position shown in Fig. 1 to fit within the compartment 6, while the edges of the plate 9 rest upon the upper edges of the Walls 2, 3, 4 and 5. The plate 9 carries bristles or other polishing material 11. One end of the plate 9 is connected to the end wall 2 by a strap hinge, comprising a hinge member 12 pivotally connected to one end of the plate 9 by a pin 13 and to a hinge member 14 by a pin 15, said hinge member 14: being suitably secured to the end wall 2.
16 designates a clasp carried by the opposite end of the plate 9, and this clasp is adapted to engage in staples 17 and 18, carried by the end wall 3 of the brush body.
19 designates longitudinal ribs or enlargements carried by the side walls 4 and 5 of the casing and providing hand grips to facilitate the use of the brush.
The hinge member 141: carried by the end wall 2 of the casing permits of the plate 9 being placed in position to close the compartment 6 with the bristles 11 of the plate 9 and the bristles of the dauber 8 fully protected, the clasp 16 in this instance engaging the staple 17 to retain the brush in a closed position. lVith the plate 9 swung against the bottom plate 1, the clasp 16 engages the staple 18 and retains the plate 9 in position, whereby the bristles 11 thereof can be used for polishing.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. In a blacking box and brush case, a casing having a closed bottom and an open top, a plate constituting a combined brush back and a lid for said casing, a strap hinge connected to one end of said plate and to one end of the casing substantially mid-Way of the height of the latter whereby the plate may swing from closed position 011 the easing to open position against the bottom of said casing, and means carried by the opposite end of said plate and said casing for securing the plate in its open and closed position.
2. In a blacking box and brush case, a casing provided with a closed bottom and open top, a plate constituting a combined brush ried by the free end 01 the plate to engage back and a lid for the casing, a strap hinge with one or the other of said staples in each connected to one end of said plate and to of its two positions to secure the plate in one end of the casing intermediate the top position.
5 and bottom of the latter whereby the plate In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 15 may be swung to closed position on the casin the presence of two witnesses.
ing and to open position against the bottom SOLOMON V. MENDEL. of the casing, staples carried by the opposite Vitnesses: end of said casing adjacent the upper and OSCAR BEILs'rEIN,
' 10 lower edges of the casing, and a clasp car- DAVID FURNIER.
