LEWIS F. BOWMAN, OF FREDERICKTOWN, OHIO.
TOOTH-BRUSIL Application filed May 21,1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Lnwis F. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at F redericktown, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth-Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in tooth brushes and consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention complete, ready for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device in closed posi tion, and showing also a housing for protecting the bristles of the brush. Fig. 3 is a top view of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a section of the body portion and illustrating how the brush carrying member is pivotally secured thereto. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the brush, and, Fig. 6 is a transverse section of Fig. 1 on dotted line 66.
In order to conveniently refer to the various parts of my invention and cooperating accessories, numerals will be employed and referring to the numerals in the drawings, 1 designates the handle portion or body proper, to which is pivotally connected the brush carrying member 2, having upon its outer end and under side a plurality of bristles 3, to form a tooth-brush of the usual or any preferred construction, the said bristles being properly anchored in position in the usual or any preferred manner, while the member 2 is provided with a plurality of apertures 4:, through which drains the anti-septic liquid carried by the sponge or filling 5 within the chamber formed by the casing 6, the latter being removable, as
clearly shown in Fig. 6.
The casingGconsists of apiece of suitable material properly shaped so as to have the inwardly directed edges 7, adapted to fit V grooves 8 in the edge of the brush carrying member 2, and the curved ends 7*, the outer curved end adapted to rest against the end Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 20, 191a. Serial No. 698,693. I
of the brush member 2 and the inner end adapted to rest upon the top of said brush member to form a liquid tight connection with the latter. It is obvious that the said casing 6 may be readily moved longitudinally entirely off of the end of said brush carrying member, so that it may be filled with any suitable form of packing 5, as a sponge designed to carry any form of sterilizing liquid, thereby insuring that the brush will be kept in a purified and cleanly condition.
Upon the body portion 1, may be mounted in any preferred way, as by the rivet 9, the nail clipping tool or device 10, while in the opposite end of said body may be located and mounted in a suitable manner a plurality of knife blades 11, a button hook 12 and similar devices, as an awl (not shown).
The brush carrying member 2 is so shaped as to cooperate with the retaining spring 13, whereby it will be held in an extended or open position relative to the handle 01' body portion 1.
As shown in Fig. 2 the body portion 1 may be provided with a pair of wings 16, one upon either side, properly spaced apart to provide a suitable housing for the bristles or brush 3, thus insuring that the brush will be thoroughly protected when closed in the pocket.
The brush carrying member 2 is provided with a longitudinal bore of suitable size to receive the telescoping member 14, having the head or cap 15 adapted to engage the outer curved end of the casing 6 to retain the latter seated.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a tooth brush having a plurality of tools, which will be found desirable and useful for a great variety of urposes and believing that the advantages and manner of constructing my invention have thus been made clearly apparent, further description is deemed unnecessary.
lVhat I claim is:
In a tooth brush, the combination of a handle having a fiat top, bristles secured in the end of said handle, said end being also provided with apertures between the bristles and grooves in the side edges thereof, a casino disposed over the top of said handle and having the longitudinal edges thereof turned inwardly and slidably engaged within said grooves, said casing being of concave-convex formation thereby forming a chamber above the bristles in the brush and communicating with the anertures, and a liquid absorbent remevably positioned Within said casing.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing wltnesses.
LEWIS F. BOWMAN.
