COMBINED SHAV'ING-IBRUSH AND SOAP-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 6, 1912.
Serial No. 702,083.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnouInALo D. METH- VEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pontiac, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Shaving-Brushes and Soap-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In arranging shaving brushes and sea holders for travelers purposes, it is desirable that the parts he so disposed as to be compact when not in use and the brush be shielde". to prevent the escape of any moisture therefrom to surrounding articles.
This invention relates to a shaving brush which is so disposed as to not only provide a shaving brush with a properly propostioned handle but also to form a compact water tight package when closed that is readily carried without. detriment to surrounding articles.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing a shaving brush that embodies the invention with the parts separated and in proper relative position for. assembling; Fig. 2 is a view showing a brush handle and shield together with a brush before assemblage for use; Fig. 3 is a view enlarged, and in longitudinal section of the article in closed position for packing; and Fig. 4 is a view in cross section taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings a brush body 1 of suitable material is secured at its end to a ferrule 2 that is adapted to telescopically engage in a tubular sheath 3. A cross pin 4 in the ferrule engages oppositely disposed longitudinal slots 5 in the sheath. The sheath 3 is rotatable in a tubular body 6 that has a pair of oppositely disposed longitudinal slots 7 adapted to register throughout their length with the slots 5 of the sheath 3, there being 0 positely disposed lateral off-sets 8 in the body slots at the ends thereof. The pin 4 is of sufficient length to extend through the sheath 3 and body 6 a Sufficient distance to engage bayonet slots 9 in the end portion of an elon ated hollow, cylindrical member 10 that sips over the outer end of the body 6. A cap 11 is adapted to slip over the end of the body 6 when the brush is pushed into the same.
In using the brush, the hollow, cylindrical member is first removed by proper manipulation, then the brush may be given a part turn to carry the pin out of the off-sets in the outer ends of the body slots thereby allowing the brush to be forced through and out of the handle sufiiciently so that the pin may be turned into the off-sets at the other end of the body slots to lock the brush in extended position. After use the reversal of this movement permits the retracting of the brushinto the handle. When the brush ferrule is turned to carry the pin out of the lateral extensions of the body slots, it turns the inner sheath sufiiciently so that the longitudinal slots in the sheath register with the longitudinal slots in the body and permit the sliding of the pin longitudinally of the body as the brush is forced inwardly. When the brush is fully retracted the movement of the pin by rotation of the brush ferrule into the off-sets at the outer ends of the body slots carries the sheath with it a sufficient distance so that the slots of the latter are out of register with the body slots and thereby seal the latter. This prevents any moisture from the brush escaping from the handle when the brush is retracted.
The shaving brush thus obtained is compact when closed and water tight sothat it does not injure contacting articles when packed. IVhen fully extended it is capable of being used in the ordinary manner.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to the particular form or arrangement shown.
What I claim is In a shaving brush a cylindrical body with longitudinal slots having lateral end extensions, a sheath rotatable in the body with longitudinal slots adapted to re ister with the longitudinal slots of the bed a brush ferrule reciprocable in the sheath having projecting parts engaging the slots of the sheath and body and turning the sheath to Patented Feb. 25, 1913.
throw the slots thereof out of register with In testimony whereof I afiix my signature the body slots when in the lateral end exin presence of two witnesses.-
tensions, and an elongated, hollow, cylindrical member adapted to engage with the 5 projecting parts of the ferrule over the end Witnesses:
