Description

S. B. LJUTICA.
FOLDING TOOTH BRUSH.
APPLICATION TILED PEBJB, 1911.
1,006,857, Patqnted Oct. 24, 1911.
Warren 's'mrns regatta" enrich.
$AVO B. LJUTICA, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
roimme. roorn-nnusn.
' To all it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAW B. LJUTIGA, a
subject of the Porte of Montenegro, who
have obtained my first papers in the matter becoming naturalized in the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Folding Tooth-Brush, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to tooth brushes, and it has for its object to provide one which i may be folded and carried in the pocket,
I the device having a box for containing tooth powder, which is permitted to reach the brush member, pivoted to the box, through an opening therein.
Additional objects of the invention will I appear in the following complete specification, in which .the preferred form of my invention is disclosed. i In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in a closed" position, a'portion of the box member being broken away to show the position of the brush member; Fig. 2'is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the device with the brush member in extended position; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device in an inverted position, and with the brush member inclosed between the extending sides of the casing; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the slide with its shank.
By referring to the drawings it willbe of a box member, having an opening 6,
'which is closed by a removable end member connected by an end piece .11, a brush mem- I ber 12 being mounted on a pivot 13 which connects the extending walls 8* at the other end of the device. The brush member 12 has flattened surfaces 14, and 15, in close proximity to the pivot 13. A cylindrical.
member 16 is disposed between the extend- .ing sides 8*, and being adapted to'engage these flattened surfaces 14 and 15. A spring 17 is disposed in the cylindrical member 16 A slide 19 is providcdfor closing the. ripe seen that a casing 5 is provided, in the shape Specification of Letters IPatent. Patented U613. 24, 1911. ""i lti iication filed rebruaiylhzieii. severing was;
-' and pressesagainst a head llS,
a. part ofthe said cylindrical mriiber'flitl.
ing10,,this slide 19 having afsh'anlr 0%,,
."which is disposed within the tens brittle spring 17L Secured to the sides of the slide 19, t1'1ere. are buttons 21,.jwhich extend through slots 22 in the extending sides 8?. an, thedevice'. I f l l Vhen' the btQlhHitilllbGlf 12 .i's foldedlaiid is disposed between the extending, sides ,Sj, theback of the brushn ember; servesas ia cover'for the compartment formed .by, the extending sides 8, the end wall 11,,and" the surface 14 of the brush member.
It will be seen by.referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, that the spring 17 not only presses against the head of the cylinder 16,
ut it also presses against the shank 20 at 7.5 the slide 19, and it therefore serves not only to hold the brush member 12, yieldingly in a predetermined position, but it also serves to hold the slide 19 yieldingly closed.
. When it is desired to use the invention, the buttons 21 are moved, carrying with them the slide 19, so that the opening 10 is uncovered, and when the device is inverted as shown in Fig. 3 ofthe drawings, the tooth powder 23, contained in the box portion of the casing 5, is permitted to flow through the said opening to the brushes 24: of the brush member 12. A slight movement of the buttons 21 is sufficient to permit sufficient of the tooth powder to'reach the bristles 24. When the tooth powder has been de posited on the bristles 24, the brush member 12 is opened, and is disposed in extended position, as shown in Fig.2 of the drawings, when the device may be used in the ordinary manner. When the user has finishedcleansing his teeth, the brush is washed, and the brush member is folded between the extending sides 8*.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a folding tooth brush a casing having a compartment with sides extending beyond a wall of the compartment, there being a slot in one ofthe extending sides, and an opening in the said wall of the compartment, a brush member pivoted to the casing and normally disposed between the sides, a cylinder disposed between the extending 11c sides, and pressing against the brush member, a spring disposed in the cylinder, a slide for closing the opening having a shank disslot inthe extending side.
2. In a folding toothbrush, a casing having acomp'artment with sides extending beyond a Wall of the compartment there being a slot in one of the extendin sides, and an opening in the said well of t e compartment, a slide for elosin the opening, a button on the slide extending through the slot in the extending side, a brush member pivoted to the casing and normally disposed between the sides, and resilient means for holding the brush member and the slide yieldingly in predetermined positions. v
3.- In a folding tooth brush a casing having walls forming a compartment with an opening, a brush member pivoted to the easing, a cylinder disposed against the brush member, a s rin disposedin the cylinder,
and a slide or c osing the opening, having the easin and resilient means disposed be pressing a ainst the slide and the tween an brush, for olding t e slide and the brush yieldingly in pre etermined positions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
