1 Claim.
This invention relates to tooth brushes of the type having dentifrice containers in the handle, and in particular a collapsible tooth brush wherein the brush is hinged to a base and a drawer for a dentifrice is slidably mounted in the base.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a compact tooth brush and dentifrice unit wherein the parts are nested in a comparatively short casing and in which the casing with the tooth brush and dentifrice therein is adapted to be carried in a pocket, handbag, or the like.
Various types of collapsible or folding tooth brushes have been provided, however, where the brush is slidably mounted on or pivotally connected to the handle it is diilloult to nest the combination in a short casing and it is also difficult to rigidly support the brush on the handle. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a base having a drawer slidably mounted therein with a tooth brush having a head carried by a short handle with a pin on the end of the handle journaled in a lug or lugs on the base and with the brush, base and drawer adapted to be nested in the cap or casing.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for pivotally mounting a tooth brush on a base whereby the brush is readily extended for use and whereby a dentifrice may be carried in a compartment in the base.
Another object of the invention is to provide a collapsible tooth brush and dentifrice combination in which a tooth brush used in the combination is of conventional size.
A further object of the invention is to provide a collapsible tooth brush and dentifrice combination which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies an elongated nat base haring a semi-cylindrical section extended from one side thereof with lugs extended from the opposite side, a tooth brush having a handle with a transversely disposed pin on one end in which the pin is adapted to be journaled in one `or both of the lugs extended from the base, and casing in which the brush and base with a dentifrice holder therein are adapted to be nested.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, where- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the tooth brush and dentifrice unit showing the parts nested in a casing.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan through the device with the parts as shown in Fig. l.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the base and dentifrice carrying drawer showing the brush extended and illustrating the device in the operative position with the casing removed.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through the casing showing the dentifrice carrying drawer extended and showing a modification wherein both of the lugs on the upper surface of the base are provided with cylindrical openings for receiving a pin on the end of the tooth. brush handle.
Figure 5 is an elevational View looking toward the under surface of the device and showing the dentifrice holding drawer extended.
Figure 6 is a cross section through the base showing the container carrying drawer in the base and showing the pin on the end of the tooth brush handle.
Figure 7 is a detail illustrating the base with the forward part thereof broken away and shown in section.
Figure 8 is a detail showing the end of the tooth brush handle with the pin on the end thereof by which the tooth brush is journaled in the base and with part of the tooth brush handle broken away and shown in section.
Figure 9 is a side elevational view illustrating the pin on the end of the tooth brush handle in the opening in a lug on the side of the base and with parts oi the base and handle broken away.
Figure 10 is a detail illustrating the base with the parts as shown in Fig. 7 and illustrating a modification wherein the openings for journaling the tooth brush on the base extends through both of the lugs on the upper surface of the base.
Figure 11 is a detail also showing a modification wherein the pin on the end of the tooth brush handle extends from both sides to correspond with the modification shown in Fig. l0.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved tooth brush and dentifrice compact of this invention includes a base I0 having lugs I I and I2 on the upper surface, a semi-cylindrical section I3 extended from the lower surface and a button I4 extended from one side, a brush having a handle I5 with a head I6 at one end and a pin Il transversely positioned on the opposite end and which is positioned to slide into an opening I s in the lug I2 to provide means for journaling the tooth brush on the base, a drawer I9 having a knob 20 on one end and a projection 2l on the lower side slidably mounted in the base and a casing 22 in which the parts may be nested when not in use, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The lower surface of the semi-cylindrical section i3 that extends from the base I0 is provided with spaced slots 23 and 24 providing a springy section or tongue 25 that is positioned to be engaged by the projection 2I for frictionally holding the drawer I 9 in the base.
The drawer I9V is provided with a head 2B from which the knob 20 extends and the upper surface of the head is provided with a recess 21 that is positioned to receive the edge of the base IB, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The opposite end of the drawer is provided with a web or end wall 23 which extends across the drawer as shown. The base is also provided with a web or end wall 29 similar to the web 28 and the web 29 provides a closure for the end of the base.
InV the design illustrated in Figs. 10 and ll a base 30, similar to the base I is provided with lugs 3l and 32 and a tooth brush handle 33 is provided with a pin 34 by which the handle is journaled in openings 35 and 36 in the lugs 3l and 32, respectively.
As illustrated in Fig. 2 the pin I'I is carried by a tongue 3'! on the end of the section I5 of the tooth brush handle and the tongue slides snugly between the lugs II and I2 providing stability of the brush with the brush folded or extended.
With the parts formed in this manner the brush may be extended from the base as illustrated in Fig. 3, for use wherein the base forms part of the handle, or the brush may be turned over to the position shown in Fig. 1 whereby the brush extends from the opposite end of the base for storage and wherein the brush and base, with a dentifrice in the holder I9, may be inserted in the case 22. The casing may be provided with a slot 38 that is positioned to receive the button I4 whereby the base and brush may be removed from the case by pressing outwardly on the button. rThe holder I9 is also provided with the projection 2I that engages the spring finger or section 25 between the slots 23 and 24 to frictionally 4 hold the dentifrice holder in the base when the brush is in use.
It will be understood that other modifications may be made in the design and -arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
In a tooth brush and dental compact, a base provided with a pair of spaced parallel lugs on its upper surface, a curved section extended from the lower surface of said base, a button extended from one side of said base, a brush having a handie with a head on one end thereof, a pin on the other end of the handle extending transversely thereof, said pin being integral with a tongue on the end of the handle, said tongue sliding snugly between said lugs providing stability for the brush with the brush folded or extended, there being an opening in at least one of said lugs for receiving said pin, said opening having a circular shape, said opening terminating in the top surface of said lug, a drawer slidably mounted in said base, a knob on one end of said drawer, a projection arranged on the lower side of said drawer, a casing receiving the parts of the assembly and provided with a slot receiving said button, the lower surface of said curved section being provided with a pair of spaced parallel slots providing a springy tongue therebetween, said springy tongue engaged by said projection for frictionally holding the drawer in the base, said drawer being provided with a recess adjacent the knob receiving the edge of the base, said drawer further including an end Wall extending transversely across an end of the drawer, said base having an end wall providing a closure for the end of the base.
