Patented Oct. 29, 1940 2,219,909 COSIWETIC HOLDER Herman O; Schlicker, Brooklyn,N.,Y., assignor to Clairol, Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York ApplicationMay 23, 1940, Serial No. 336,875
8 Claims.
This invention relates to cosmetic holders particularly arranged for convenient storing and ready application of cosmetic sticks such as mascara, touch-up pencils, and the like.
In accordance with my present invention, a stick of the cosmetic material is mounted on a base which is pivoted at one end of the container, to permit ready swinging of the stick out of or back into the container. Projections are arranged on the base to limit the outward swinging movement of the stick into a predetermined extended relation. A side of the container is swung into open position to permit the extension of the cosmetic stick. The container side is thereupon closed firmly to hold the cosmetic stick in the extended position by suitable interlocking of the base thereof, as will be described in detail hereinafter.
The container and base are constructed and assembled so as to provide for the removable mounting of the base with respect to the container, thereby permitting the use of refill units comprising of a cosmetic stick rigidly mounted in the base.
Further in accordance with my present invention, I incorporate a small cosmetic brush, in the swinging side of the cosmetic container. A preparation such as mascara or eye-shadow is arranged in the container for use with the brush. The whole constitutes a miniature make-up kit which is self-contained and immediately available for use.
These and other advantages, capabilities and objects of my invention will appear in the following detailed description of a specific embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective illustration of a preferred form of the cosmetic container in its closed position.
Figure 2 is a perspective illustration of the cosmetic container, corresponding to Figure 1,
a with the cosmetic stick locked in the extended side view of the cosmetic conthrough a section of' the container of the invention as taken along the line 1-1 of Figurefi.
Referring to the drawing, casing 10 of the container is substantially rectangular in form and is preferably made of a plastic material. One side I], of the casing 10 is pivoted at one end [2 thereof, exposing a corresponding side of the container to permit the cosmetic stick to bee):- tended or retracted. Projections l5 molded into side. I l and extending therefrom coact with slots 56 in the sides of the casing Hi, serving as-a gripping member to permit ready opening of'side H. A consumable cosmetic stick I! extends from a rigid base l8 preferably molded of a plastic ma.- terial, the base and stick providing a replaceable unit.
Pins l9 extend from the sides of base 18, and are inserted in corresponding openings in the side walls of container 10 for pivotally supporting cosmetic stick H, the side walls being of sufficient resiliency to permit lateral displacement for insertion and removal of the replaceable cosmetic stick unit. Cosmetic stick I! may be of any suitable material such as touch-up composition, mascara or the like. A projection 20 extends from base It, and is arranged for interlocking with lip 21 extending from the top edge of pivoted container side II. A recessed region 22 is formed by projection 2001 base 18 against which lip 2| of side H is moved as indicated in Figure 5, for locking side H in the closed position, and holding the cosmetic stick I! stably in the interior of the container.
When the cosmetic stick I! is opened. up to the extended position, as shown in Figure 2, projection 2i! is arranged to abut the top edge 23 of container H) to limit the swing of the cosmetic stick to the upright position shown. The extendedposition of the cosmetic stick I! and, associated base I8 is illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 5. A transverse notch or recessed portion 24 in base I8 is arranged to coact with extending lip 21 of side H to lock the cosmetic stick I! in the extended position illustrated in Figure 2. The coaction of lip 2| of side H with the base i8 is similar to the interlocking with the base when cosmetic stick I! is in the interior or closed position. The abutment of projection 20 of base i8 against edge 23 of case ID in conjunction with the interlocking of lip 2| with recessed portion 24 of base 18 rigidly holds the cosmetic stick I! in the predetermined extended position, permitting the convenient application of the cosmetic stick with container l0 serving as a holder.
A mascara brush 25 is indicated in dotted in Figure 4' recessed between mounds 26, 21 molded with side'l l. A spring clip may be incorporated in mounds 26, 21 to hold mascara brush 25 in proper position when not in use. A bar of eyeshadow or other soft cosmetic material may be incorporated with the cosmetic holder of the invention to enhance the utility of the arrangement. Figure '7 illustrates eye-shadow bar at extending from an insert 3| attachable to the container side I0. Figure 6 illustrates the eyeshadow bar 30 in position on container side l0, across'line 'l-'l of which sectional Figure, 7 is taken. Alternatively, the cosmetic disk 30 may be incorporated at inner region 28 of lid l l, indicated in Figure 4.
It is to be understood that the composition of the cosmetic material for either the cosmetic stick I! or the cosmetic disk 30 may be of any desired material for the makeup lnt comprising the invention. The cosmeticstick I1 is readily removable from the container l0 across the pivotal pins [9 of its base, and may well be replaced after being consumed. Similarly, cosmetic stick 30 may be removed from side I0 through its base 3| for replacement.
' Although I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that modifications as to construction, arrangement, and use may be practiced Without departing from the broader spirit and scope thereof as set forth in the appended claims.
