Description

Sept. 5, 1950 A. N. TURNES COSMETIC CARRIER AND APPLICATOR Filed March 22, 1949 INVENTOR. J50")? as,
ATTCI RN EYS Patented Sept. 5, 1950 UNITEDv STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,521,269 COSMETIC CARRIER AND APPLICATOR Angel Nunez Turnes, Bronx, N. Y.
Application March 22, 1949, Serial No. 82,762 2 (c1. 132-85) 3 Claims. 3
The present invention relates to the general class of toilet articles, toilet kits, cosmetic containers and applicators, and more specifically to an improved cosmetic carrier and applicator of the portable type for personal use containing a removable cartridge adapted for refilling with a lip stick, rouge, or other cosmetic, and an associated brush for applying the cosmetic. The primary purpose of the invention is the provision of a compactly arranged cosmetic kit in which the cosmetic and the brush or applicator may be carried and maintained in sanitary condition, and which may readily be manipulated and opened for ready access to the brush and the cosmetic, and which may with equal facility be closed when not in use for storage in a hand bag or other receptacle.
The compactly arranged kit of metal or other suitable material, size, and shape, includes a minimum number of parts that may with facility be manufactured at low cost of production, and the parts may be assembled with convenience to provide a device of this character that is durable, and efiicient in the performance of its required functions.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter be described, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a complete example of my novel kit in which the parts are combined and arranged in accord with one mode I have devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention. It will however be understood that changes and alterations are contemplated in these exemplifying drawings and mechanical structures, within the scope of my claims, without departing from the principles of the invention.
Figure l is a perspective view of the inner casil'lg of the kit; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the cartridge; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of a stick of cosmetic or compound.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the applicator or brush with its extensible handle retracted; and Figure 5 is a perspective view of the exterior cap-sleeve or cover for the kit.
Figure 6 is a view in elevation of the brush with its handle extended.
Figure '7 is a perspective View showing the cartridge enclosed within the inner casing.
Figure 8 is a perspective ViW of the split annular spring for clasping the brush handle.
Figure 9 is a longitudinal sectional view of the closed kit. Figure 10 is a transverse sectional view at line I0|ll of Fig. 9; and Figure 11 is a similar view at line I I-I l of Fig. 9.
In the preferred cylindrical form of the invention shown in the drawings I employ an inner casing or carrier I having closed ends, one of which is fashioned with an annular exterrior flange 2 forming a stop for the open end of an exterior cover or cap-sleeve 3.
The inner casing is formed with a lateral aperture or side opening 44, and the longitudinal edges of the aperture terminate at their ends in transversely arranged arcuate slots or notches 5 and 6, while one closed end of the casing is fashioned with an exterior recess 1, the curved wall of which is provided with opposed slots as 8. These slots accommodate the projecting ends 9, 9, of a split annular spring 10, that is mounted in the interior of the closed end of the casing to form a resilient clasp in retaining the handle of a brush within the kit as will be described.
A holder or cartridge II, for a cosmetic C, which is removably fitted within the casing and which is shorter than the casing, is fashioned with end heads I2 and I3, and a side aperture or slot l4 conforming to the aperture 4 of the casing; and these transversely arranged heads have segmental or arcuate exterior tongues or flanges l5 and I6 that fit snugly in the notches 5 and 6 for frictional engagement in holding the cartridge within the casing. The flanged head I2 is recessed as at l! for alinement with the recess I of the casing, and the head I 3 is recessed at l8, so that these three recesses and the apertures of the casing and the cartridge provide a storage space for the applicator and within the sleeve cap 3.
As here shown the applicator is a brush B having a head I9 and tubular extension 26 fashioned with diametrically arranged longitudinal slots 2 I, within which a handle 22 telescopes, and the handle is provided with a guide pin 23 adapted for limited travel in the slots of the extension.
In stored position, as in Fig. 9 where the applicator is confined within the cap-sleeve and mounted in the recesses provided therefor, the handle is contracted and clasped by the ends of the spring, with the tip end of the handle projecting beyond the closed end of the casing, so that, when the cap-sleee is removed the handle is readily accessible and the applicator or brush may be removed; the handle may then be ex- 3 tended and made ready for use in applying the cosmetic.
After use, the handle of the brush is again contracted, the brush is slipped into the alined recesses and clasped by the spring-ends, and the cap-sleeve is slipped over the casing, cartridge, and brush, as a sanitary cover therefore.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a container and applicator for cosmetics the combination with an interior casing having a lateral aperture and provided with closed ends, each of the longitudinal edges of the aperture terminating at points spaced from the closed ends to provide notches in said longitudinal edges, of a removable cartridge having a complementary aperture and closed heads, said heads each having an arcuate flange fitted in the notches, and an enclosing open-end cap-sleeve fitted over the casing and the cartridge.
2. In a toilet kit the combination with an inner casing having a lateral aperture and pro-' vided with closed ends, each of the longitudinal edges of the aperture terminating at points spaced from the closed ends to provide notches in said longitudinal edges, of a removable cosmetic cartridge having a complementary aper-' ture and closed heads .and arcuate flanges on said heads fitted in said notches, said closed ends having exterior recesses, an annular spring mounted within a closed end of the casing having brush handle engaging ends located in a recess in the closed end portion of the casing, and a cap sleeve fitted over said casing and said cartridge.
3. In a toilet kit, the combination with an inner casing having a lateral opening and closed ends one of the closed ends having a recessed portion, a removable cosmetic cartridge having a complementary opening, and coacting means on the casing and cartridge for retaining the latter in the former, of an annular spring mounted in the recessed closed ends and projecting through slots in the walls of the recess for clasping the handle of a brush, and said cartridge also having end Walls each having a recess to accommodate said brush and its handle.
