FOUNTAIN BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
Application filed September 3, 1918. Serial No. 252,296.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RONALD W. MACCOR- KELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain- Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in fountain brushes and especially in those adapted to contain so-called shaving cream, and the object of the invention is to prot'ide a fountain brush having means for feeding the fluid or pasty material from a reservoir, in which the entire mechanism for feeding said material will be under cover; in which the feeding means can be entirely removed from the reservoir when desired; in which the operation of replenishing the fountain brush with a full reservoir will be simple and convenient; which will have means for feeding said material in regulated quantities as desired; and which will contain means for closing-the receptacle against the access of air when it is desired to preserve said material unused for a considerable time.
Other novel features of my improved fountain brush will be hereinafter described in the-specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.
' In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a circular plate 4' rotatable in a circular recess in thetop' of said frame, the inner-surface of said extension 3 being threaded and the tube 2 being externally thieaded at the top and screwed into said extension. Said plate 4- is formed with a diametrically extending bridge 6 to which is rigidly attached an end of a stem 7 having thereon a sharp-pitched thread 8. Turning on said stem is an internally threaded plunger 9, which slides in a reservoir 10, preferably of glass, open at both ends, and angular, here shown as octagonal, in form. The inner end of said reservoirfits snugly in an octagonal recess or groove 11 in the upper side of the frame 1. From the upper side of said frame 1 extends an externally threaded circular wall 12, and on said threaded wall is screwed the lower end of a cylindrical handle 13 closed at the top.
.lower end of said tube is externally threaded, as shown at 18, and a hard rubber cap 19, can be screwed thereon to prevent access of air to the contents of the reservoir during long periods of disuse of the fountain brush. The adjacent walls of the frame 1 and casing 1o are formed with outward annular extensions 21 and 22, which at first lie closely adjacent to each other, but then curl outward, and, surrounding the curled outer portions of said extensions, is a band 23 having its edges curled inwardly over the curled edges of the extensions, and thus securing said frame and casing 16 together, but permitting either to rotate relatively to the other.
On turning the handle 13, the casing 16 being held stationary, the plunger 9 is also turned, and is therefore moved longitudinally on the stem 7 and, if the rotary movementof the handle 13 is in the proper direction said longitudinal movement of the plunger will be inward, thereby forcing the fluid or semi-fluid contents of the reservoir downward in the reservoir and through the openings 25 in the plate 4-,on opposite sides of the bridged, and thereby expelling an equal amount of said contents through the open end of the tube 2 and into the midst of the bristles 17.
In order to insure that the turning movement of the handle 13 and frame 1 is made in the proper direction, there are formed, at diametrically opposite parts of the upper side of the casing 16, recesses 26 having square shoulders 27 and sloping surfaces 28, and into the said recesses can enter pins 29 contained in socket-s :51 in the lower side of the frame 1, and pressed outwardly, when permitted, by coiled springs 32 in said sockets, said pins 29 having rounded lower ends to facili 'ate their upward movement on said sloping surfaces 28. The parts are so proportioned that a one-half turn of the frame 1 expels an amount of semi-fluid I of a bristle casing, bristles contained therein, a. tube for supplying fluid material, extending longitudinally in'said bristles, and rotatable with said casing. a threaded stem rotatable with said casing, a reservoir around said stem, a plunger non-rotatable in said reservoir and through which said stem is screwed, means for inclosing said reservoir rotatable in one direction \rela- 1 tively to'said casing, and means for preventing rotary movementof said inclosing means in the other direction.
2. In a fountam brush, the coinblnation of a bristle casing, bristles contained therein, a tube for supplying fluid material, extending longitudlnally 111 sald bristles, and rotatable with said caslng, a threaded stem rotatable with said casing, a reservoir around said stem, a plunger non-rotatable in said reservoir and through whlch said stem is screwed, means for inclosing said reservoir rotatable relatively to said casing, and means for regulating said rotary movement.
3. In a fountain brush the combination ofa casing for holding bristles, bristles therein, a tube extending longitudinally in said bristles and rigidly connected to saidcasing, a frame provided with a recess and rotatable relatively to said casing, a plate 40? rotatable in said recess and having acentral aperture with which an end of the tube communicates, and a bridge across said aperture, a threaded stem rigidly connected to said bridge, a reservoir rotatablerelatively to the casing, and a plunger non-rotatable in said reservoir and through which said stem is screwed.
:L The combination of a casing, a frame adjacent to the casing, a tube extending centrally through said casing and frame and rlgldly connected to the casing, bristles around the tube within the cas1ng,'1neans extending from the casing and frame for rotatably malntamlng sald caslng and frame adjacent to each other, astem rigidly related to the casing, a reservoir rigidly related to the frame, and. a plunger in said reservoir through which said stem is screwed. said r plunger being the reservoir.
