Be itcknown that we, JOSEPH A. SARGERY and OMER DUPONT, both-subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Sherbrooke, Province of Quebec, Canada, haveA invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Toothbrushes; and we do hereby declare, that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v

The present invention relates to tooth brushes and more particularly to a fountain tooth brush that may be carried on the person and contain a suitable quantity of cleansing material. An object of the present invention is to provide a -device of this character which may be readily folded or placed in a compact case so that it will take up a comparatively small amount of space when not in use. y

A further object of the present invention is to provide a tooth brush of this character wherein the cleansing compound or material may be stored within the handle of the brush and fed to the brush in any desired quantity when using the same.

The invention further seeks to provide storage tubes for such tooth brushes which tubes may contain the cleansing compound and which may be readily and easily applied to the brush so that when the cleansing compound has been exhausted from one tube a new tube filled with the cleansing compound may be substituted therefor.

lVth the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

ln the accompanyingr drawings has been shown a simple and preferred form of the invention, .it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrifie ing the efiiciency of the same.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated byv simisection through the the same;

The brush herein shown comprises a handle l of any suitable material having the bristles 2 secured thereto forming a brush for cleansing teeth. This handle l has a passageway 3 leading thereto and one end thereof terminates adjacent the medial portion of the brush. Arranged within the handle l and communicating with this outer end of the passageway 3 is a vertical extend- V ing tube 4 preferably rubber which extends within the bristles of the brush. The opposite end of the handle 1 is provided'with a reduced threaded portion 5. The handle is provided with a detachable section 6 which is to contain the cleansing material and oneend of this section 6 is provided with an internally threaded opening 7 for the reception of the reduced threaded portion 5 of the handle l. The brush and the section l of the handle may be incased by means of a detachable cover 8 and this cover -ioov threaded portion 10 for the reception of anl externally threaded portion on plug 11 and this plug is adapted to close one end of the storage receptacle 12 formed withln the section 6. Extending through this plug 11 1s a rod 13 and one end of this rod 13 has connected thereto a milled disk 14 through which this rod 13 may be manually rotated.

This rod 13 is provided with a flange 15 which rests against one face of the plug 11 for retaining the rod in position and the extended end of this rod 13 is threaded as at 16 so that a piston 17 may travel thereupon.

From the foregoing` it is obvious that a 'suitable cleansing compound such as a tooth paste or powder ma)v be placed within the chamber 12 when the plug 11 has been re- 'inoveth and when thesection 1 is connected to the 'section 2 and the piston 17 placed in proper position within the chamber 12 this cleansing compound may be forced from the chan'lber 12 through the passageway 3 to the bristles 2 of the brush by rotating the milled disk 14. It is also apparent that the proper or desired amount of cleansing material may be fed to the brush by turnmg this milled disk 1i so that the piston 17 may travel within the chamber 12. It will also be further obvious that when the brush is not in use the cover may be placed thereover for protecting the same. and that the device as a whole will take up but a comparatively `small amount of space, and as the handle is made in two sections, 1 and 6 respectively, these sections when desired may be disconnected to further reduce the length of the device.

In the form of the invention just .described the cleansing material is placed within the chamber 12 and of course is to be taken from a package containing a supply of such cleansing material. In Figs. 7 and 8 of the thawings I have illustrated how the cleansing material may be better dispensed. In these figures of the drawings I have shown a tube 18 having its opposite ends open and which tube may be made4 of Celluloid or a like material. removed'and the covers 19 removed from the tube 18. This tube 18 is then placed within the chamber 12 of the Section 6 as better shown. in Fig. 6 of the drawings. When this tube is in position within the handle of the brush the threaded end 16 of the rod 13 may be connected to the piston 17 in the manner as better illustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawings whereby the cleansing material may beforced from this tube 18 through the channel 3 to the brush 2. In this manner when a tube becomes empty a new one may be substituted therefor and a number of these tubes may be carried or be in the possession of asingleperson.

In Figs 10 to 12 inclusive Aof the drawings is an illustration of another slightly modified form of the invention. In this form of the invention the chamber 12 of the section 6 of the handle 1 is to retain a cleansing material in a powdered state and this powder is supplied from one end of the section 6 to the brush instead of supplying the same through the channelway 3 of the handle 1. Asui'table rubber plug 20 may be placed within the channel 3 by closing one end thereof and the plug 21 may be detachably connected within the outer end of the section 6. This plug 21 is provided with the openings 22, extending thereto and, rotatably connected to the plug is a disk 23 having a plurality of openings 24 formed therein which are adapted to register with the openings 22 formed within the plug 21.

In this manner the reduced portion 5 and the plug 20 carried by the handle 1 will close the opening 7 formed within the section 6 and the plug 21 will close the opposite end of the section 6. When it is desired to use 4the Cleansing powder contained within the chamber 12 the disk 23 may be rotated so that the openings 2t may register with the openings 22 and by shaking the section 6 the powder may be delivered from the compartment 12 where. it may be used for cleansing purposes. Y

The threaded extension 5 of the handle 1 may be slightly longer than the threaded opening 7 so as to extend within the compartment 12 as better shown in Figs. 6 and 10 of the drawings, and one end of the tube 18 may have a slightly threaded reduced portion 30 to receive this extended threaded portion of the member 5, so as to lock the tube within the section 6 of the` handle, thereby preventing the same from rotating as the piston is .forced through the tube.

Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as 'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
