To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Combs and Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combined comb and brush and my object is to provide means for housing a comb within the brush frame.

A further object is to provide means for normally holding the comb seated within the cavity in the frame.

A further object is to provide means for limiting the outward movement of the comb, and,

A still further object is to provide means for moving the comb outwardly when released.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a plan view of the brush showing portions thereof broken away and the comb seated within the cavity in the frame. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the comb extended. Fig. 3 is a sectional view as seen on line 3-3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view as seen on line 4 4 Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the body of the frame which may be constructed in the usual or any preferred manner and extending inwardly from one edge thereof is a cavity 2, portions of the end walls 3 being extended at an angle to the remaining portion thereof, said 1nclined portions forming shoulders 4 at the outer edge of the cavity.

Seated within the cavity 2 is a comb 5 which is provided with the usual form of teeth, the ends of the body portion of the comb being outwardly inclined to form shoulders 6, which are adapted Vto engage the inwardly inclined shoulders 4 at the ends of the cavity, said shoulders forming a stop for the comb which limits the outward movement thereof.

Seated in channels 7 are spiral springs 8, which are adapted to direct outward pressure on the comb and force the same outwardly when released, the edge of the comb body having notches 9 therein into which the ends of the springs are adapted to rest, the central portion of the notches being provided with stems 10 over which the ends of the springs fit, said stems serving to hold the springs in proper alinement.

The tension of the springs 8 is suflicient to hold the comb extended while being used but will readily contract when inward pressure is directed against the teeth of the comb.

In order to hold the comb seated within i the cavity, the body of the comb is provided with an opening 11 into which is adapted to extend a lug 12 of a spring latch 13 and when the lug is entered in said opening, the comb will be securely held within the cavity.

One end of the spring latch 13 is fixed to the bottom face of the cavity 2, while the 0pposite end thereof is extended upwardly and provided with a push button 14, the upper end of which projects through an opening 15 in the top of the body 1 so that downward pressure may be directed thereon to force the latch downwardly and disengage the lug thereon from the opening in the comb. Attached in the usual manner to the lower face of the body 1 are the bristles 16 which form the brush.

When the brush is not in use, the comb is seated within the cavity and it will be readily seen that the brush can be used without the comb, but if it is desired to use the comb independently of or in connection with the brush, downward pressure is directed on the button 14, whereupon the springs 8 will immediately move the comb outwardly until the shoulders 6 engage the shoulders 4, the movement being such as to extend the teeth of the comb beyond the edge of the body and the tension of the springs 8 is such as to hold the comb in fixed position under ordinary circumstances.

As soon as the combing operation has been completed, inward pressure is directed against the outer ends of the teeth of the comb and the comb moved inwardly until the latch engages the opening therein.

This combined comb and brush is more be readily extended for use or seated within the cavity and that a perfect housing is provided for the comb.

What I claim is :k

l. The combination with a brush body having a cavity therein, the outer portions of the end walls of said cavity being inclined inwardly; of a comb slidably mounted in said cavity, means to force said comb outwardly, said comb having a portion of its end walls inclined outwardly to coperate with the inclined walls of said cavity and limit the outward movement of said comb, and means to normally retain said comb seated within the cavity.

2. The combination with a brush body having a cavity therein, said body being also provided with channels leading from said cavity; of a comb slidably mounted-in said cavity, said comb being provided with notches on the inner longitudinal edge thereof, springs seated in said channels and having one end thereof in engagement with the notches of said comb adapted to force the same outwardly, means to limit the outward movement of said comb, and additional means to normally retain said comb seated within the cavity.

3. The combination with a brush body having a cavity therein, said body being also provided with-channels leading from said cavity; of a comb slidably mounted in said cavity and having'the inner longitudinal edge thereof provided with notches, stems mounted in said notches, springs seated in sadchannels and having one end thereof in engagement with said notches adapted to force said comb outwardly, said stems serving to hold said springs in proper alinement, means to limit the outward movement of said comb, and additional means to normally retain said comb seated 4within said cavity.
