:iTTUlUVE COMBINED BRUSH AND COMB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, I915.
Applicationfiled May 12, 1913. Serial No. 7662991- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. WOODALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combined Brushes and Combs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined brushes and combs.
One object of my invention isto provide a a brush and comb in compact form so that it may be readily carried a traveler.
A further object of my invention is to provide a combined brush and comb which may be used to brush and comb the hair at the same time, and which is capable of being disassembled so as to use either the brush or comb separately.
Another object of my invention -is to provide novel means for releasably securing together a brush and comb.
()ther novel features of my invention. are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved brush and comb. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross section, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional longitudinal view through the socket of the brush.
- Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates the body of the brush and 2 the bristles.
3 is a comb having two notches, one at each end.
Embracing the periphery of the body 1 is an angle band 4 having one side vertical portion 5 spaced apart from the body 1 so as to form a socket for receiving the comb 3. A projection comprising a horizontal pin 6 secured to the band 4 extends into the socket at one end thereof and is adapted to enter one of the notches 7 of the comb. The other notch 7 at the other end of the comb is adapted to receive a projection comprising an inwardly extending pin 8 provided on a plate 9 located at one end of the socket and pivoted to two ears 10 on the band 4.- by a horizontal pin 11.
A coil spring 12 is mounted on the pin 11 and has one end bearing against the band 4: and the other end against the plate 9, the tension of the spring being such as will force the plate 9 to the locking position shown in the drawings.
To insert the comb 3 in or remove it from the socket, it is but necessary to swing the plate 9 outwardly until the pin 8 is clear of the adjacent end of the comb. Preferably the teeth of the comb extend beyond the outer ends of the bristles 2, thereby affording protection to the bristles when the device is carried packed in a grip, and also enabling the brush and comb to be more easily used for brushing and combing the hair at the same time. When so used, the comb is preferably ,disposed'in advance of the brush.
To disengage the comb for separate use, the plate 9 is swung outwardly to a position in which the pin 8 will be removed from the adjacent notch 7, after which the comb may be readily Withdrawn from the socket.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as modifications, within the scope of the appended claim, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is
A brush having a body provided with a straight edge, and a band encircling said body and secured thereto and spaced apart from the straight edge to form a socket adapted to receive a comb, the band at one end of the socket having means for engaging releasably a comb, the other end of the socket being open, and a spring actuated locking device pivoted to the body and adapted to close the open end of the socket and having means for releasably engaging a comb.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specificationin presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM E. WOODAIJL.
