' s claims. (ci. 13a- 120) This invention generally relates to a locking device and more specifically provides improved and novel construction in a locking device for detachably securing two objects or members together.
An object of this invention is to provide a locking device that is simple in construction, easy to utilize, "efiicient in operation, positive, well adapted for its intended punposes and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object of the present invention is to .provide a locking device for detachably securing two mem'bers together including interengaging socket and projection means together with a movable member for retaining the socket `and projection means in interlocked relation.
Still ano-ther important object of the invention is to provide a locking device conformable to the preceding objects wherein means `for retaining two members in interlocked relation is frictionally retained in position.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings yforming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view taken substantially along the longitudinal center line of a combination comb and brush on which the locking device of the present invention may be utilized;
Figure 2 is a 4bottom plan view of the construction of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse, vertical sectional view taken substantially upon a :plane passing along section line 3 3 of Figure l showing the relationship of the groove and the elongated rib `positioned therein;
Figure 4 is an exploded perspective fragmentary view of the sliding latch mechanism for retaining the elongated rib in the elongated groove; and
Figure 5 is a side elevational view showing the locl1- ing device of the present invention employed for retaining a fishing reel on a fishing rod.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, it will be seen that the numeral 1i? generally designates the locking device of the present invention including a brush designated generally by the numeral 12 having an elongated body 14 thereon with a longitudinal handle 16 projecting from one end thereof. A plurality of bristles 1S are positioned in the undersurface of the body 14 of the brush 12 in the usual manner and elongated longitudinal groove 20 is disposed in the undersurface of the body 14 and is disposed between `adjacent bristles 18. The groove 20 is provided with the longitudinally extending socket 22 in one end wall thereof and the other end thereof is provided with an end wall 24. Positioned within the groove 20 is an elongated comb generally designated by the numeral 26 and including `an elongated rib 28 together with projecting teeth 30 wherein the rib 28 is positioned in the groove l20 and provided with the longi- 2,816,557'. Patented Dec. 17, 1957 ICC 2 tudinalprojection 32 on one end thereof for engagement in the socket 22 in the end wa-ll of the groove The other `end of the elongated `rib I28 of the comb 26 is provided with a horizontally disposed notch 34 which lis disposed Islig'htly above the wall'24 of the groove 20 when the rib 28 is positioned within the groove 20.
Positioned in the bottom surface of the handle "1'6 of the brush 12 is ya recess 36 for receiving a mounting plate "38 that is held inthe recess 36 by mounting screws 40. Slidably positioned on the mounting plate 38 is an elongated latch plate 42 having depending side lianges 44 thereon and an elongated -slot 46 in the center thereof together with a fastening screw 4S that is provided with a head and extends into a threaded aperture 50 inthe plate 38 Iand .into an `aperture 52 in the handle 16. The screw '48 is headed and forms-an abutment `for the side edges of the slot 46. It will be noted that the depending side flanges 48 on the latch plate 42 increase in width `from one end of the plate 42 to the other end wherein the end of the flanges 44 -adjacent the notch 34 are relatively narrow and the fianges 44 adjacent the other fend of :the latch plate 42 remote from the notch 34 are relatively wide wherein the lheaded screw 48 will 'engage the edges of the slot 46 when the plate y42 -is moved into overlying relation with `a portion of groove 2t) thereby frictionally locking the latch plate 42 in locked position with the end thereof in engagement with the notch 34 .for locking the elongated rib 28 of the comb 26 in the groove 20. A detent 54 may be provided on the latch plate 42 for manipulating the latch plate 42 by longitudinally sliding the plate 42 into a position for latching the brush 12 and com'b 26 or in a position for permitting the removal of the comb 26 from the brush 12.
As illustrated in Figure 5, the locking device of the present invention may -be utilized in other orientations with one of the orientations being illustrated and including a fishing rod 56 and -a fishing reel 58 having a base 60 thereon which is locked in a groove in the fishing rod 56 by the lock plate 62. The details of construction of the groove and the base 60 are the same as the details of construction of the groove 20 and the elongated rib 28. The lspecific locking device of the present invention may also be utilized in other various orientations and not illustrated, and the device forms a positive :and readily releasable lock for easily and quickly securing one mem- 'ber to another member wherein the locking device may be readily unlatched for removing or detaching the members from each other.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
