LOCKNG- MEANS.
Application filed uy 25, 1925. -Seria1 N10. 45,975.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, OTTO H. Manz and PETER D. HUMLEKER, citizens of the United States, residing at West Allis, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, and Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, respectively, have invented a certain new and usefullmprovement in Locking Means, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. y
This invention relates to improved locking means particularlyY adaptable for use in such structures as combination storm and screen doors for detachably locking either the glazed or screened closure in the door frame or casing.
Among the important objects of the invention are, tofproduce a locking device comprising only few parts whichl can be readily formed of metal by simple dies; to form the locking device frame so that it may have jointed connection with its supporting wall and so that nails or screws need not be depended upon to hold the frame in place; to provide detent mechanism forming an integral part of the frame, for locking the latch or locking bar against accidental removal from the frame, and for releasably locking such bar in locking position when the device has been installed and is in service; and, in general, to produce a simpler,
' more reliable, and more easily installed device of the class referred to.
On the drawing.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the corner of a door frame and closure insert secured therein by means of our improved locking means;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on plane 2 2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on plane 3 3 of Fig. 2; and
edge, the insert engaging against the ledge 13 and the ledge 14 engaging against the door frame 10 when the insert is in the opening 11 to thus form Weather tight fit. The insert shown supports the glass 15, it being understood that instead of glass it could support a screen. The device for locking the insert within the door frame comprises a frame or body 16 and a looking or latch bar 17. l The body 16 is formed from a single piece o1 sheet metal which is depressed to provide the longitudinally extending guide groove 18 and the surrounding fiange 19, the inner end of the groove and fiange' being semioircular. The longitudinal walls of the groove 18 are deflected so as to form the dove-tail sides 2O and 21, as clearly shown in Fig. 8, and the door frame is routed out with a dove-tail bit to form the dove-tail channel 22 for receiving tie dove-tail sided body 16, such joint engagement securely locking the body 1G so that a few rads 23 driven through the Hange holes 24 into the door frame will be sufiicient to hold the locking device against displacement. f
The locking or latch bar 17 can be readily formed bymeans of suitable dies from stock bars having the dove- tailed sides 25 and 26 which cooperate with the inner faces of the dove- tail side walls 20 and 21 of the groove 18 in body 16. The outer end of the locking bar is defiected upwardly a trifle in order to provide a beveled under surface 27. The body 16 of the locking devices is positioned transversely on the door frame at right angles to the sides of the insert opening 11, and for receiving the projected locking bars the insert frame has the kerfs or recesses 28 formed therein, and the beveled under surfaces of the locking bars engage against the inner sides of these kerfs in order to clamp the insert frame to the door frame with weather tight engagement.
The inner end of the locking bar 17 is deflerted upwardly to form an abutment 17 by which the bar may be readily slid in the frame 16. For preventing accidental removal of the locking bar from its supporting` frame and also to gauge the outward movement of the bar into locking position, a detent hump or abutment 29 is deflected from the bottom wall of the groove 18, and in the locking bar is the longitudinal slot .Dill into which the abutment Q9 extends to cooperate Witli the slot ends to limittlie movement ot the lookingT bar. A spring tonejue 3l secured to the bottoni vsall et the traine 16 is adapted to engage the abutment shoulder' on the inner end ot the looking;` bar to tliusliold said locking bar in its outer or locking position. il slight pressure on the spring tongue 3l will release it from tlie looking` bar so tliat the bar can be Withdrawn villen it is desired to remove tlie insert 'traine trom the door trame. vfVlien tlie looking bolt is drawn inwardly, tlie spring tongues l?? will essnre against the underside o't lie ba f vill liold it in position away trom tbe openingq li. so as to be out ot tbe Way oi tbe insert i ame when suoli 'frame is bring' inserted. iit'er insertion ot` tlie insert, tbe locking' devices, ot which any de- C'ired nunilier may be positioned around tlie opening can be aotuated to bring' the? into locking position, and tlie insert liars will then be securely and tightly clamped to the door Ytrame and will be locked sev in suoli gosition.
The improved loelrirngr device is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture and to install. The dove-tail channels in tbe door trame can be quickly formes and the dove-tai1 frame 16 slid therein into position.` ard this joint engagement will be sulticient to securely lool; tlie devices to the door trainej the nails 28 beingr merely provided as additional mea-ns for more tightly securing the looking' devices. The spring` tongues 81 look tl'io looking` bars in outer ),)osition and tlieretore no amount of rattli e' jarring or jolting of the door can dislodge the looking bars from looking position or detach the 'trames 16 from the door mie.
"Elie claims are as follows:-
l. i locking device ot' the class described comprising' a body part termed integral of slieet metal and liaving a longitudinally eX- tending groove, a locking bar Within said 51'1 oove.y interlocking engagement between the side edges ot said bar and the sides ot d Groove tor confining said bar to sliding movement in said proove, a detent defdeeted trom tbe bottom or said groove cooperating .vitli bar to limit the outward moven'ent tliereo't, and a second detentin the w toni ot said groove tor cooperating ivitl'i d bar to lool: it in outer position.
A locking device for the purpose de- 'sm'ilied comprising a body part formed inial oi slieet metal and having a longitui extending' groove, a looking bar tliin said groove having interlocking en- ;,g'agement vcitli the groove sides to be con' med to sliding` movement in said groove7 a de'i'ent del'leeted trom said .body part `for eoonriating Witli said bar to limit the outward and inward movement thereof, and a spring' tongue in the bottom ot said groove for eo operating with said bar to look it in outer position.
ln Witness whereof, We hereunto subscribe our names this 22nd day of July, 1925.
