To all whom #may concern.'

Be it known that I, ANTONIO BoNGIovANNI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barnesboro, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Hair-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates in general to hair brushes and more particularly to a cleaning device therefor, one object of the invention being to provide a device of the character described which embodies novel features of construction whereby the cleaning device is housed within and'carried by the brush, and whereby the cleaning device may easily and quickly be brought into operation and the brush kept in a sanitary condition without the use of any special` tool or instrument. Y

Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction and which does not hinder the use of the brush in the usual manner, and whereby the appearance of the brush is not marred in any way.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a hair brush constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, portions being broken away and shown in section to more clearly illustrate the details of construction. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the handle of the brush detached from the brush head. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, showing the handle detached from the head of the brush and the manner of cleaning the brush with the cleaning device.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views ofthe drawing by the same reference characters.

Specifically describing the invention, the numeral l designates the head of the brush which may be formed of any suitable material and which is provided with the usual Specification of Letters Patent.

bristles 2, and the numeral 3 designates the handle of the brush, `the said handle and head of the brush being detachably connected at 4. Any suitable means may be provided for detachably connecting the handle and head of the brush, although in the present instance a very desirable and expedient manner is shown. The rear end of the brush is shown as cut off squarely at 5, and one end of the handle 3 is correspondingly squared at 6 so as to lit against the square end of the brush head and form a neat and smooth joint therewith. Springplates 7 are applied to opposite sides of the rear end of the brush by any suitable means such as the rivets 8, the outer end of said spring plates projecting outwardly beyond the rear end of the brush head and overlapping the opposite sides of the handle 3.

Near their outer ends the spring plates 7 are provided upon their inner faces with knobs or projections 9. which may be formed in any suitable manner, present instance they are shown as pressed from the metal plates. The end of the handle 3 is provided upon opposite sides thereof with depressions 10 which correspond to and are adapted to receive the knobs or projections 9 on the plates 7. /Vhen it is desired to connect the handle of the brush to the brush head it is merely necessary to force the end of the handle between the plates 7 until the squared end of the handle abuts against the squared end of the brush, when the knobs or projections 9 upon the spring plates 7 will snap into the depressions l0 in the handle 3, therebylproviding a Secure and positive connection between the handle and the brush head. This form of connection may be particularly desirable for detaching the handle and brush head to facilitate the packing of the same, although it is more specifically designed to facilitate in the use of the cleaning device for the brush.

It is contemplated to provide the cleaning device for the brush at the end of the handle thereof so that the cleaning device may be normally housed within the brush head. In the present instance the cleaning device is shown as comprising a plurality of teeth or pins 1l which are arranged in a transverse row and project longitudinally outward fromthe squared end of the brush handle. The rear end of the brush head is provided with a recess 12 adapted to realthough in the ceive the teeth or pins 11 when the handle is connected to the head of the brush. It will be, seen that at all times, except when the cleaning device is in operation, it is entirely housed within the recess of the head of the brush and does not in any Way detract from or mar the appearance of the brush. When it is desired to clean the bristles of the brush the handle 3 is detached from the brush head and the brush head inverted as shown in Fig. 4. The teeth or pins 11 upon the handle are then forced through the bristles in a manner similar to that shown by Fig. 4f, and as the teeth are forced through the bristles they will remove any loose hair or dirt which may have been collected by the bristles of the brush.

It will thus be seen that a very effective cleaning device for the bristles of the brush has been provided, and that the said cleaning device is normally housed within the head of the brush so as to be imperceptible when not in use, although said cleaning device can be easily and quickly brought into operation when it is desired to clean the brush. j

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ist- 1. A brush cleaner including a handle having a square end,- a removable head carried by the handle and having a square end abutting against the square end of the handle, said square end of the head having a recess therein, a series of brush cleaning prongs projecting from the square end of the handle and received within the recess of the head, and fastening means detachably connecting the handle to the head.

2. A brush cleanerincluding a handleV having a square end, a removable head carried by the handle and having a square end abutting against the square end of the handle, said square end of the head having a recess therein, spring plates projecting from opposite sides of one of the members and provided with inwardly extending projections,4 the other member having corresponding depressions adapted to be engaged by the projections to lock the handle and head together, and a series of brush cleaning prongs projecting from the square end of the handle and received within the recess of the head. v
