To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. Gross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Durbin, in the county of Pocahontas and State of TWest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in brooms and more particularly to new and novel means for attaching the handle to the body of the broom.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a tubular metallic broom handle which is adapted to be inserted into the body of a broom and receive a portion. of the broom straw in its end, and means for quickly and securely fastening the handle and the broom body together.

- A further object is to provide a tubular broom handle and means for securing a broom body to the end thereof, said handle having a removable closure in one end whereby various articles of household use may be carried in said handle.

IVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a broom constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section showing the means for securing the broom on the lower end of the handle; and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 5 indicates my improved broom handle which is of tubular form and is constructed from a continuous sheet of metal. The lower end portion 0f this broom handle is circumferentially corrugated, as shown at These corrugations are adapted to receive the binding wire 7 which is wound around the lower end of the handle and the broom straws to secure the broom body 8 and the handle 5 together. As clearly shown in Fig. 9., the broom straws of the center of the body 8 extend into the end of the tubular handle 5 and above the corrugated portion thereof. These broom straws, as indicated by the numeral 9, completely iill the interior of the lower end of the handle and form a body therefor which prevents the sheet metal being bent as the binding wire 7 is tightly drawn around the saine and disposed in the corrugations 6. Thus the wire may be very tightly wound to prevent the broom body becoming detached from the handle without danger of distorting the metallic handle so that it will retain its original shape even when considerable pressure is brought to bear thereon.

The upper end of the handle 5 is provided with internal screw threads which receive the externally threaded tubular shank 10 of a head 10. This removable head provides a convenient handle portion which may be grasped as the broom is manipulated. The head may be unscrewed from the handle and different household articles such as tacks, tack pullers, or dust cloths mayl be stored therein so that their possible loss is prevented.

From th-e foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a broom which is simple and light in construction and of great utility to the houseworker.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that the same may be variously modified without departing from the essentialfeatures or sacriiicing any of the advantages thereof.

I-Iaving thus described the invention what is claimed is:

A tubular broom handle having a peripherally corrugated end portion adapted to be described in a broom body, a portion of the broom straw extending into the end of the tubular handle above the corrugated portion thereof, and the remaining portion of the broom straw being disposed upon the exterior of the end of the handle, and means wound about the straw and engaging in the corrugations of the handle to rigidly secure the broom body to the handle.
