Be it known that I, ALBERT L. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Handle and Fastener Thercfor, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to an improved handle and fastener therefor, the same being especially adapted for use upon metal coal and coke baskets, the primary object of the present invention being the provision of a flexible handle, made preferably of rope, and a sheet metal fastener therefor, constructed to properly clamp and hold the flexible handle against longitudinal creeping, and also prevent the cutting thereof at the point of protrusion beyond the ends of the fastener.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of a stamped sheet metal fastener, which is provided with a sleeve so constructed as to have its ends flared, due to the novel formation in the metal of the sleeve of corrugations, such corrugations also providing biting means to engage the handle within the sleeve and when the handle fastener is riveted or otherwise secured to the basket, it being clamped upon the handle to securely hold the handle in assembled position.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figs. 6 and 7 are views illustrating modified means for holding the flexible handle against longitudinal movement in the sleeve.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of a metal coal or coke basket near the upper rim thereof, the

sheet metal handle carrying an attaching device 2, being secured by rivets or other fastenings 9 thereto. The device 2, is made from sheet metal the edges being primarily or initially turned in as at 13 to reinforce the edges and to relieve the device of rough or cutting edges at such points. The plate is then formed with the handle receiving sleeve (1, which has the plates 3 and at formed at a tangent thereto, to form parallel means for attachment to the basket 1, and to act as a means to reduce the circumferential area of the sleeve 6, and thus form a handle clamp. Through the apertures 5 of the plates 3 and i are passed the rivets 9, which, as above stated, hold the plates 3 and 4 firmly together and upon the basket 1., and clamp the spliced or overlapping ends 10 of the flexible hand grip or handle 11, therewithin and in fixed relation to the basket. After the sleeve 6 is formed, a plurality of corrugations 5 are formed longitudinally thereof, and in a portion only of the circumference thereof, the same being so drawn therein, as to produce the flaring ends 7 to the sleeve 6, and allow for the necessary movement of the flexible handle 11, without cutting into the handle, as is the case where the ends are not flared.

The spliced or overlapping ends 10 of the rope handle 11 are Preferably held together by the fastenings 12, although any means may be provided at this point, as the clamping action of the sleeve 6, upon the portion of the handle 11 within the same, is such, as to in most cases, securely hold the handle against separation.

As shown in Fig. 5, two series of corrugations i i. are formed in the sleeve 6, this forming the desired flared ends 7, and also producing the desirable engaging means within the sleeve to bite and hold the handle 11, when the parts are assembled.

Where fastcnings 12 are dispensed with, the sleeve has formed therein the plurality of ribs 15 formed circumferontially thereof, or triangular shaped projections 1.6. The ribs 15 or projections 16, when the sleeve is clamped by the rivets 9 upon the handle 11, grip the handle within the sleeve and hold it against longitudinal slipping.

It will be noted that the handle when properly clamped in the sleeve is held against both longitudinal and rotary movements, the flared end 7, however, permitting a slight movement at the ends due to the flexibility of the handle When a load is placed thereupon, but presenting a surface Which will not cut into the handle and thus in time render the same useless.

What is claimed is:.

1. In a device of this character, a metal plate formed With a sleeve and tWo normally spaced attaching plates, a portion of the body of the sleeve being provided With longitudinal corrugations and the ends of the sleeve being flared, a flexible ring shaped handle threaded through the sleeve, and means for attaching the metal plate to an article and for holding the spaced plates together to clamp the sleeve upon the handle.

2. A fastener for a flexible handle, ineluding a sheet of metal provided With a handle receiving sleeve and tWo attaching plates, said plates being normally spaced, the body of the sleeve being provided With drawn corrugations longitudinally thereof and With flared ends, whereby When the attaching plates are secured to an article, the handle is clamped in the sleeve With the corrugated portions biting the handle to prevent longitudinal and rotary movements of the handle relatively to the sleeve.

3. A fastener for flexible handles, including a handle clamping sleeve having depressions in the body thereof intermediate of the ends and its ends flared, the depressions holding the flexible handle against longitudinal and rotary movements and the flared ends permitting the movement of the handle at such points Without cutting the handle.

4. A fastener for flexible handles, including a metal plate having a sleeve and tWo plates forming an attaching means for the sleeve, the body of the sleeve having a plurality of inwardly disposed projections to form gripping means to hold the flexible handle against longitudinal movement.
