DUST-PAN ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21,1913.
Application :filed September 6, 1912. Serial No. 719,029.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. WARTMAN, a citizen of Canada, residing at Montesano, in the county of Chehalis and State of IVaShingtOn, have invented a new and useful Dust-Pan Attachment, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to a dust pan attachment.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efcient device, adapted to be readily applied to the handle of an ordinary dust pan during the manufacture of the dust pan, or after the same has been made, and capable of supporting the dust pan in proper position upon a floor or other surface to receive dust and other accumulation from a broom, and thereby leave both hands free for sweeping and obviating the necessity of assuming a stooping position while using the dust pan.
A further objectof the invention is to provide an attachment of this character adapted to clamp the foot to enable the dust pan to be lifted and carried around by the same, and capable of forming a hanger for the dust pan and a support for the broom, when the same are not in use.
Vith these and other object-s in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, ,within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing z-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dust pan attachment, constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a dust pan, thelatter being hung and a broom being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, a broom being illustrated in full lines. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, illustrating the manner of supporting the dust pan for use. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, taken longitudinally of the handle of the dust pan. Fig. 5 is a similar view, illustrating the manner of permanently attaching the device to the handle of a dust pan.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the attachment is constructed of wire or other suitable material, which is bent at a central point to form a hanger eye l and twisted at 2 at the inner side of the eye, which projects at the upper side of the handle 3 of a dust pan t in a direction longitudinally of the handle. The wire is then bent at right angles to the plane of the eye and oppositely bowed to form approximately semi-circular handle clamping jaws 5, and are crossed ata point diametrically opposite the hanger eye 1. The clamp formed by the jaws 5 is circular, and it is adapted to grip tightly the handle 3 of the dust pan, whereby the attachment is securely retained thereon.
In order to prevent the handle clamp from slipping on the sheet metal handle of the dust pan, a ring 6 of rubber or other suitable material is preferably employed'. The ring 6, which is arranged at the outer end of the handle 3 adjacent to the bead 7 has a smooth inner face and is provided in its outer face with an annular groove 8 to receive the aws of the'handle clamp, which tightly grips the rubber ring and securely clamps the same on the handle of the dust pan. The handle clamping jaws are readily opened by compressing the terminal portions or jaws 9 of the device. This will enable the latter to be readily applied to and removed from the handle of the dust pan. The terminal portions or jaws 9, which are arranged inthe same plane as the handle clamp, are oppositely bowed or bent into approximately U-shape, the ends 10 of the wire being straight and bent inwardly and spaced apart. The U-shaped terminal portions -or jaws form a combined cla-mp and support, which is arranged in a plane transversely of the handle 3, and they eX- tend downwardly or rearwardly from the same. The straight ends 10 are adapted to rest upon the floor or other surface to support the handle of the dust pan in an elevated position with the dust pan in proper position to receive dust and other accumulation. rlhe combined support and clamp is sufliciently broad to maintain the dust pan firmly in such position. The combined support and clamp is adapted to clamp the foot,
the toe of a shoe being introduced into the space within the clamping jaws or portions 9. Any tendency of the shoe to spread the jaws operates to clamp the device more firmly on the handle of the dust pan. The combined clamp and support firmly grips the foot and enables the dust pan to be lifted, carried and placed in any position by the same, thereby leaving both hands free for sweeping. The hanger enables the dust pan to be readily hung on a nail 11, and when the dust pan is hung therefrom, the combined foot clamp and support extends outwardly in substantially a horizontal position and is adapted to receive and hold a broom 12, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing- The distance between the spaced ends 10 of the wire is suflicient to permit the handle of a broom to be passed readily through it, thereby facilitating the introduction of the broom into the combined foot clamp and support and the removal of the broom therefrom. The head of the broom rests upon and is i supported by the jaws or members of the foot clamp, which embraces and securely retains the broom in such position.
l/Vhen it is desired the attachment may be applied to the handle of a dust pan during the manufacture of the latter, and as illustrated in F ig. 5 of the drawing, the handle clamp 13 is secured within a terminal bead 14 of the handle 15, the sheet metal being rolled or beaded around the handle clamp. The device may, however, be applied to the handle of the dust pan in any other desired manner, and the provision of the hanger eye obviates the necessity of punching the usual opening in the handle to enable the dust pan to be hung on a nail, or other supporting means.
What is claimed is 1. A dust pan attachment constructed of wire and including a loop adapted to embrace the handle of a dust pan, a hanger extending from one side of the loop at an angle thereto, and a combined dust pan support and clamp arranged in the plane of the handle engaging loop and composed of spaced approximately U-shaped portions forming a relatively narrow entrance opening through which the handle of a broom may be passed and thus enable a broom to be introduced into and removed from the combined support and clamp, said spaced portions being adapted to yieldably engage the foot when introduced into the combined support and clamp.
2. A dust pan attachment constructed of a single piece of material bent to form a hanger eye and oppositely bowed or curved at an angle thereto to form a handle engaging' loop or clamp and crossed at a point opposite the hanger eye, the said hanger eye being arranged to project beyond the handle of a dust pan in a direction longitudinally thereof, the terminal portions of the material being oppositely bowed or bent in the plane of the handle engaging loop or clamp to form a combined support and a foot clamp.
3. A dust pan attachment constructed of a single piece of material bent to form a hanger eye and oppositely bowed or curved at an angle thereto to form a handle engag ing loop or clamp and crossed at a point opposite the hanger eye, the terminal portions of the material being oppositely bowed or bent in the plane of the handle engaging loop or clamp to form a combined support and a foot clamp, the ends of the wire being substantially straight so as to lie beneath the foot and spaced apart to permit the handle of a broom to be passed between them to enable the broom to be introduced into and removed from the combined support and clamp.
a. A dust pan attachment constructed of resilient material oppositely bowed or curved to form a loop or clamp for engaging the handle of a dust pan and crossed at the bottom of the handle, the terminal portions of the material being oppositely bowed or bent in the plane of the handle engaging loop or clamp to form a combined support and foot clamp, the ends of the wire being substantially straight so as to lie beneath the foot of the operator and spaced apart to permit the handle of a broom to be passed between the ends to enable a broom to be introduced into and removed from the combined support and clamp.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto ai'liXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE HENRY VARTMAN.
