PICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1912..
To all whom di may concern:
Be it known that'l, HENRY MARTINI, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Girard, Macoupin county, Illinois, have invented oentain new and useful Improvements in Picks, of which the following is av specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the 'accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to an improved pick,
and consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and pointed out in the annexed claims. v
rl`he object of my invention is to provide an improved pick and separableI handle therefor especially adapted for miners use. A further object of my invention is to provide an improved separable handle and pick in which the construction shall be very strong, cheap and easily adjusted.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved pick and its handle socket, detached from each other; and Fig. 2 is a. sectional elevation taken longitudinally through the handle socket, with the parts assembled.
The numeral l 1ndicates the pick having centrally of its length an integral stem 2 extending laterally from'the pick and tapered from the pick toward the end of said stem. vThe opposite sides lof said stem 2 are provided with flattened portions 3, and formed on opposite sides of the pick are rectangular depressions 4 having opposite abrupt shoulders 5.
The numeral 6 indicates the handle socketwhich upon its interior is shaped to correspond ywith the exterior of said pick stem 2, and to fit snugly thereon when the socket is lin position upon the pick. The said socket 6 is provided at its free end with a bifurcation 7, the opposite walls of which snu ly lit t-he opposite depressions 4 of the saidg pick, and the opposite ends of said walls snugly tit-ting against said shoulders 5 of the pick when the handle is on the ick.
The bolt 8 is passed through openings 9 in the opposite walls of the bifurcation 7' and through an opening 10 in the pick for the purpose of locking the handle in operative position. The said bolt 8 may, as
shown, have threads on one of its ends which engage threads in one of the Walls of said bifurcation, or said bolt may have the usual exterior nut.
rlhe operation of my invention will be clearly apparent upon an inspection of the drawings and therefore need not be described, except to say that the construction provides a detachable handle for picks and other tools which is very highly efficient in use, cheap and simple in construction and operation, and in which the pick may be quickly attached or detached for the well known purposes of sharpening or renewing -the pick.
It is obvious that a single handle and socket may be 'interchangeably used with .numerous picks, or other tools having the pick construction above described.
I claim:
The improved pick, comprising a tapered hollow handle-socket having a bifurcation in its' end, the walls of which are adapted to engage the opposite depressions in a pick. a pick having opposite depressions in its sides and an integral laterally extending socketshank tapered to t within said handlesocket and having the opposite flattenedportions, so that the ends of the socket bifurcation walls will fit snugly between opposite shoulders of said pick depressions, and a suitable means for locking the said socket upon said stem.
In test-imony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY MARTINI.
