UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. LESTER, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Nol90,878, dated May 15, 1877; application filed March 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES S. LESTER, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton, and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a device for securing h'oes upon their handles, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 detached portions, of my hoe.
In the figures, A represents a metallic head, which is cast with a tapering hole to receive the handle B, and also with the projections a, c, and d.
The projection 11 is cast upon the shank F upon the under side of the head. The shank F is for the purpose of supporting the lower end of the hoe-blade.
D represents the hoe-blade, which is provided with two holes, w w, and which is so formed that it can be reversed in order to use either the top or the bottom of the hoe, as circumstances may require, or wear may demand.
The lugs or projections 01 and 0 pass tb rough the openings :1: w in blade D, while the lug a is upon the head above the hoe-blade. E represents a metallic strap provided with two holes. One of these holes catches over the lug a, and a screw, 0, passes through the other, and then into a female screw in the projection 0.
This strap passes over the upper end ofthe hoe-blade, and when the strap E is placed in position and secured by the screw 2 the blade is firmly secured in position.
The tapering hole in the head enables me to secure the handle on firmly. After the handle is once inserted in the head and the hoe-blade is fastened to said head, the handle cannot be removed without first taking the hoe-blade off.
This head may be used for hoes or other garden implements, or mops, or things of that character.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The head A, provided with the lugs a, o, and d, and constructed substantially asrepresented, in combination with the blade D, the strap E, and screw 6, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of 'March, 1877.
JAMES S. LESTER.
