DETACHABLE PICK-POINT.

Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 13, 1912.

To all whom it may concern:

citizen ofthe United States, residing at Wickham, in the county of Raleigh and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Detachable Pick-Point; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This inz' ntion relates to a new and useful detachable point for picks.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a point of this nature, so that the same may be easily detached, for-sharpening.

Another object of the invention is the production of a simple and desirable detachable point in which essential and practical features of construction exists. a

The principal feature of the construction is the provision of a key for locking the point to the pick head, and means for locking the key in place. y

The invention comprises further features in combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing the application of the improved detachable point. Fig. 2 is a sec-. tional view through the point showing how the same is secured to the head of the pick. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the locking key and its locking means.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates a pick head having the usual handle 2. Each end of the pick head is provided with a rectangular socket 3, there only being one shown in detail. The sockets are designed to receive the 1 'ictangular lugs 4 of the points 5. The lugs4 are rovided with semi-circular recesses 6. The pick head '1, at each end is formed with an aperture 7. Keys 8 having threaded reduced portions 9 are inserted in the apertures 7, so that the threaded reduced portion 9 will engage the threads 10 of the apertures. The cylindrical portions of the keys seat in the recesses 6 of the lugs 4, so as to lock the points to the pick head. The outer ends of the keys 8 are bifurcated-as shown at 11. Pivoted inthe bifurcations are the locking members 12. These locking members constitute means for screwing the keys home, and when fully screwed home the members 12 are thrown at right angles to the keys and seated in recesses of the pick head, which recesses 13 are shaped to receive the members 12. The members 12 lock the-keys I 8 in place.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is new and useful is In combination, apickhead having a rectangular socket and provided with a transverse opening, a detachable point having a rectangular lug provided with a semicircular recess seated in the socket, a key received within said opening and threaded therein and entering the recess a number pivoted to the key for screwing the same home, the pick head having a recess at right angles to the key opening, the member being shaped to fit the recess of the head and adapted to be swung at right angles to the key and seated in the recess of the head.
