T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARTIN MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Knobs, of which vthe following is a specication. i
This invention is a door knob and is an improvement upon my prior Patent No. 1,128,339, issued Feb. 16, 1915. The principal object of the present invention is to provide for the convenientand inexpensive formation Yof the ratchet teeth on the interior of the knob shank, and to accomplish this result, the doorvknob of the present invention, or at least the tubular knob shank, is formed in longitudinal sections, whereby each section may be cast independent Yof the other. The'shank sections have an interlocking engagement whereby they may be rigidly held when assembled so as to avoid looseness and disconnection of the parts when in use.
In the present construction, as in my prior patented device, access is had through a longitudinal slot in the knob shank to an internal dog or catch vwhich interlocks the knob shank and the spindle, whereby the dog or catch may be yreleased to permit .removal of the knob. In this connection,
the present invention provides for normally maintaining the slot closed so as to exclude rain, dirt', etc., and also to provide for'convenient access to the slot whenever it is desired to remove the knob. The means for closing the slot is a sleeve embracing the shank and extending from the knob to the door, and this sleeeve provides a neat nish for the knob shank, and obviates the neces.

With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the drawings, and particularly set forthV in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details may be made, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Fig. Sis a cross-sectional view on the line vention is a sectional device, and'in the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, land 5, there is a knob section integral with the shank section. In the figures just mentioned, one section is designated generally A and theother section designated generally B. The section A includes a shank 1 which is substantially semi-cylindrical in shape and 'Lis provided with a central longitudinal bore or passage 2 extending entirelyl through the section and of substantially rectangularv shape in cross-section. On one end of this shank section is formed a knob section 3 which is preferably hollow and elliptical in crosssection. rFhe opposite internal walls of the bore 2 are provided with' ratchet ,teeth 4, and the flat face of the shank is provided with opposite longitudinal notches or recesses 5 leading to the respective ratchet teeth and intersectingthe inner and outer faces of the shank. At that end of the shank which is circular loop 6 which'is integral with the shank and produces a circular end, said loop having a rectangular bore or opening 7 for a purpose as will be hereinafter described. Within the `bore .2 ofthe shank and at the knob end thereof there is a'substantially rectangular seat or depression 8, and an opening 9- eXtends from the back of this seat through the outer face of the shank. The other section B includes a shank 10 and a knob section 11 which are complements of the previously described shank section l and knob section 3, and the two sections are designed to be fitted face to face and brazed or otherwise secured so as to form a complete knob and shank. rIhe section B is provided with a bore 12 and notches or recesses 13 leading to ratchet teeth 14, as described for the section A. A longitudinal projection 15 extends centrally from the shank 10 and is of a size and shape to fit snugly within the loop 6 of the section A, with the fiat faces of the two knob sections lying` in mutual engagement, the notches or recesses 5 of one section registering with the complementary notches or recesses 13 of the other section, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The shank 10 is provided at its inner end with a central boss 16 of a size and shape to fit the seat or recess 8, and a stud or projection 17 extends` outwardly from this boss and projects through the opening 9, the outer end of the stud or projection being upset so as to constitute a rivet or fastening to hold the sections together. The section A is provided with an ear or projection 19 within the outer portion of the knob and projecting beyond the edge thereof so as to overlap the joint between the two knob sections, and the 'other knob section is provided with a similar ear or lug 18. These lugs are in the nature of wedges and when the sections are `forced to- Cal gether, said lwedges hold the knob sections togetherl while brazing is being done, and furthermore strengthen and stiften the knob after completion.
The knob of the present invention is fastened on the spindle-by the same means illustrated in my prior patent and forms no part of the present invention. The spindle 20 is provided with a longitudinal slot 21 extending through the spindle from side to side, and within the slot is mounted the double dog 22 on a pin 23, as shown and described in my prior patent. The free extremities of the dog extend outwardly through the open edges or sides of the slot 21 into engagement with the ratchet teeth 4 and 14 of the shank sections, the walls of the ratchet teeth being arranged so as to prevent the knob shank from being pulled longitudinally oli'l of the spindle, whereby the knob and the spindle are interlocked in an effectual manner. r1`he dog may be released by means of a suitable implement passed through the slots formed by the complementary notches 5 and 13 of the shank sections.
While not essential to the present invention, the device may be provided with a sleeve 24 embracing the shank and extending between the knob and the adj acentl face of the door so as to normally close the slots which give access to the door. The exterior of this sleeve may be plain or ornamented, and is provided with diametrically opposite slots 25 which normally liev out of register .With the slotsv in the shank, the'sleeve itting the shank with a snugness to prevent accidental rotation thereof but at the same time permitting of manual rotation to bring the slots into and out of register with the slots of the shank so as to give access to the door whenever it is desired to remove the knob.
In order to adapt the present invention to a knob or glass, porcelain or the like, the knob section is of course omitted from the shank section, as shown in Figs. G and 7 of the drawings, and each shank section is provided with a semi-circular external flange 26 a suitable distance inwardly from lthe knob end of the shank. The glass, porcelain or other knob 27 is provided with a central socket or recess 28 in which the knob end of the shank is received with the flange 26 closing the open end of the recess 23 and the extremity of the shank held in the recess by lead 29 or other composition commonly used for such purposes. The shank sections are otherwise the same as that described for tl e form having integral knob sections.
Having thus described the invention, what Iclaim is:- K
1. A door knob shank including longitudinal sections having complementary bores provided with ratchet teeth, one of the sections having a terminal transverse loop, and the other section having a projection embraced by said loop.
2. A door knob shank comprising longitudinal sections provided with complementary bores having ratchet teeth, one of the sections having a transverse opening, and the other section having a stud or projection extending through the opening and upset upon its outer end to hold the sections together.
3. A door knob shank comprising longitudinal sections provided with complementary bores having ratchet teeth, one section having a transverse terminal loop, the other section having a terminal projection embraced by said loop, and a stud and opening engagement between the sections at the other end of the shank, the stud being upset upon its outer end.
4. A door knob shank comprising longitudinal sections provided with complementary bores provided with ratchet teeth, said shank sections having complementary recesses leading to the ratchet teeth, and also provided with interfitting connecting portions.
5. Adoor knob shank comprising longitudinal sections provided with complementary bores provided with ratchet teeth, said shank sections also having complementary recesses leading to the ratchet teeth, one of the sections having a transverse terminal loop, the other section having a terminal projection embraced by the loop, and an opening and projection engagement between the sections at the other end of the shank, the projection being upset on its outer end,
