BRUCE FORD, 015 PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HANDLE FOR BATTERY-BOXES AND MEANS FOR LOCKING SAME.
Specification of Letters Patent. i
Application filed April 19, 1913. Serial No. 762,194. I I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Bacon F one, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Phil adelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain neW and useful Handle for Battery-Boxes and Means for Looking Same, of which the following is a specification.
.The principal object of the present invention is to provide a readily accessible hand'e for battery boxes and to secure the same to the wall of the battery box in such manner that as the box is dragged lengthwise the strain-011 the handle is resisted by the full thickness of-the end of the box.
The invention will be claimed at the end hereof, but will be first described in connection with the enibodii'nent chosen for illustration in the accompanying drawings, in Whieh-- Figure 1, is an elevational view of a portion of the outside of a battery box equipped with a handle embodying features of the invention. I
Fig. 2', is a transverse sectionalview of the same.
. Figs. 3, hand 5, are detail views illustrating parts of the locking means, and
Figsfti and 7, are respectively a sectional and a side view otba modification.
In the drawings 1 is the wall of a battery box. It is provided with a lengthwise opening 2 and,a crosswise openings". l, is a socket adapted to be arranged inthe opening 3 in .the side wall of the box and it is provided with a threaded end 5 and with 7, isa notch for gauging the alinement of the hole in assembling the parts. 8, is' a nut having the l'rustum and general form of a conic adapted to engage the thread 5 and to occupy an appropriately shaped seat Formed in the side wall L. "ll, is a lock washer arranged on the inner face of the nut, when necessary. 'lhe bail part 10 of the handle may be ol 'set inward from the outer ei'lge llach arm 1]. of the handle extends into a recess 2 and as shown isnotched at 12 for the reception of the cylindrical Dart 13 of too socket. I
signed my name.
The parts may be assembled by first inserting the socket through the opening 3 and then applying the nut and lock washer loosely to its threaded then be inserted in the cavity 2 through the opening (5 to its proper position, or until the notch 12 is opposite the part 13 of the socket. 'lhereupon the nut can be screwed up, for example, by means of a-spanner applied to the groove 14 and. it Will thenhold the handle firmly to place. The arms or end parts of the handles are clamped from end. The arm 11 can T STATES PATENT OFFICE,

the inside tace'ot' the wall of the box, so
that the strength of the thickness of that wall is utilized for resisting dragging pulls on the handle. By putting the ends of the handles in the openings 2, both the inside' and outside of the box are smooth, but the handles may be on the outside as in Fig. 6,
and'the socket may be provided with a' lateral hole or opening 6 Flg. 7. \Vhat I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.- in a box the combination of a box Wall, a handle having two straight arms parallel with the wall, and a pair of threadedly cooperating socket and nut-members arranged through the wall and whereof the socket member of each pair is provided 1 with an opening through which one handle arm passes and is movable inrespect to the box wall to clamp the arm in respect to the box wall and the wall -of the opening. 2. In a box the combination If an integral box-wall having vertical openings in it arranged between its inside and outside laees,-a handle having abale above the top of the box and having two arms arranged in said openings, and threaded nuts and 00- operating sockets arranged througlr the wall of the box, said sockets havmgopen ings the walls oi" which clamp the arms in aspect to' the box wall, substantially as de-' scribed.
in testimony whereof I havehere'unto BRUCE FORD. Witnesses Enoan L. LONGAKER, WM. 0; DUBOIS.
