T0 all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, JosEPH HENRY OSTRAN- DER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ticonderoga, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Interchangeable Journal, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to journals and admits of general use, but more particularly to journals of the kind used upon rollersfor in stance, in paper-mills.
Among the several objects of my invention are: first, to render the journals readily interchangeable second, to provide against displacement of the journal from its proper position; third, to give the journal such conformity as will enable it to be braced when in position, and, fourth, to provide certain constructional details affording peculiar advantages.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding partsin both figures.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary horizontal section through a roller equipped with my invention; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, viewed as from the right of Fig. 1.
The roller is shown at 3 and is provided with a portion 3 which is smooth internally. The roller-head is shown at 4 andis provided with a neck 5, slightly enlarged at its outer end. The journal is shown at 6 and is provided with a threaded portion 7 and with an annular brace 8, the latter being adapted to.
abut against the neck 5, so as to securely hold the ournal 6 against lateral movement. The annular brace 8 is provided with wrenchsockets 9 for use in unscrewing the journal, so as to remove it from the head 4.. The threaded portion or stem 7 is provided with an annular groove 10, encircling its middle, and thus dividing the threaded portion 7 into two parts, as will be understood from Fig. 1. A set-screw 11 engages the head 4 and is adapted to enter the annular groove 10, so as to secure the threaded portion firmly in position. This screw is sunken within the head 4, so as to be out of the way. The portion 3" is shrunken upon the head 4.
If it be desired to remove the journal 6,
the screw 11 is first removed, and the journal 6 is then taken out by applying a wrench to the sockets 9, and thereby turning the annullar brace S,which is integral with the journa 6.
My invention can be applied to rolls already in use by reboring the heads and providing them with new screw-threads, mating those of the portion 7, and further providing the heads with the set-screws 1 1. In other words, the rolls already in use are easily converted into the form of rolls into which my invention enters as a factor.
Having thus described my invention, I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a roll, a roll-head connected therewith and provided with a threaded aperture, a journal provided with a threaded portion engaging said threaded aperture, said journal being further provided with an annular groove, and a set-screw mounted within said roll-head and extending obliquely into said groove so as to engage said journal.
2. The combination of a roll provided with a cylindrical end portion, a roll-head mounted within said cylindrical end portion and projecting therefrom, said roll-head, being threaded internally, a journal threaded externally and secured into said roll-head, and a set-screw engaging said rollhead and also engaging said journal, the general direction of said set-screw being oblique relatively to the axis of said journal in order to enable said set-screw to avoid engagement with said roll.
3. The combinationof a roll, a roll-head connected therewith and threaded internally, said roll-head being provided with a neck slightly enlarged at its outer end and also being threaded internally, and a journal threaded externally and fitted into said rollhead, said journal being provided with an annular brace engaging said neck.
