My present invention per il ifi 1 I proved trenching tool, and h as}for.i ts ob.
ject to provide a 'simple,-stron-g and readily convertible tool, one in -which the relation of the handle to the tool elements or members may bequic'kly changed and the parts.
firmly secured in their adjusted positions.
The invention isiillustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein: Figure l is a side elevation of the tool,
the handle standing at right angles to the tool body;
Fig. 2 a similar view showing the handle in another position;
Fig. 3 a sectional elevation, the section being taken through the handle on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 a sectional view of the shank or body portion of the tool, the handle being shown in side elevation;
Fig. 5 a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 a similar view on the line 66.
The tool proper may be said to comprise a pick 1 and a shovel or spade 2, connected to each other by an intermediate body or hub 3. Said body is provided or formed with two intersecting sockets l and 5, said sockets standing at right angles to each other, the former lying at right angles to the major axis of the tool, while the latter is substantially parallel therewith. Said sockets or recesses are preferably made with a slight taper toward their inner ends, and merge into each other at their outer portions. The body 3 will preferably be rounded or cut away, as at 6, where the walls of the two sockets conjoin, to facilitate the swinging of the handle 7 from one position of adjustment to another.
The inner end or shank of the handle is so formed as to closely fit the sockets, 4 or 5 as the case may be, and is provided with an elongated slot or opening 8 through which Extend a cross pin 9, the pin being driven or otherwise secured in openings pecificatibn o f'Letters Patent Patented N f 'fi .1917 nimati n team .49 6 s sa a sa4r1.

TI, w ll tli" sbe seen I v skewin 9. 1s thebt e w s t ca 114yi' and -f9 1insth l n e o d y. it may be swung through an arc of 90 and then pushed-inwardlyinto-the ali-ned socket and locked in place by the bolt 10 or 11.
To facilitate the actuation of the bolts and to render their locking engagement automatic, I preferably round or curvethat end of the handle which normally contacts with the bolt as the handle is pushed home, such rounded portion being designated by 12. As will be readily appreciated, the bolt will be moved outwardly as it rides over such curved face, placing the spring under compression, the bolt being finally protruded into the slot when the handle is fully pushed home. I
Preferably the pick-point will be flattened, as at 13, Figs. 2 and 3, so that it may have a fair bearing on the adjacent face of the handle when the parts are brought to what may be termed shovel position, thus relieving pin 9 and the outer wall of socket 5 from undue strain.
It is evident that by making the member,
I claim is z 1. In a combined tool, the combination of a hub or body portion, having two sockets formed therein at substantially right angles to each other; a tool element extending out-- Wardly therefrom; a handle, the shank whereof is adapted'to fit in one or the other of said sockets, said handle having an elongated opening extending therethrough; and a pin secured in the hub aforesaid and extending through the opening.
2. In a combined tool, the combination of a hub or body portion having two sockets formed therein at subsiaetieili Fi g s lhatfby seesawto each other; a tool element extending out wardly from opposite sides of said hub; a handle, the shank whereof is adapted to fit in one or the other of said sockets, said shank having an elongated opening extending 'therethrough; a pin secured in the hub and passing through the opening; and latches mounted in the hub and associated respectively with each socket, said latches being wardly from the opposite side of the hub; a handle, the shank whereof has a sliding and pivotal connection with said hub; and means for securing the handle in one or another of its positions with reference to the hub, the handle, when brought into substantial parallelism with the tool elements, bearing on the flattened face of the first-named tool element, whereby the handle when in such position will be braced by the tool element against which it bears.
l. In a combined tool, the combination of a hub or body portion provided with sockets formed therein at substantially right angles to each other; a handle, the shank whereof has a sliding and pivotal connection therewith, one side face' of the shank at its outer end being slightly rounded; and a spring latch mounted in the side wall of the hub in line with each socket, and adapted to cooperate with the shank to hold the same in its adjusted position, said latches, respectively, riding over and being pressed outwardly by the rounded face aforesaid as the shank is moved inwardly into one or the other socket. 1
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
HARRY W. SMOOK.
