6 Claims.
This inventionrelates--to---a combination tool and handle.
The chief object of the present invention resides in providing a two socketed handle, complementary formed shank provided tools, and a singular anchor member identicall bearing up on the handle when selectively associated with a tool shank depending upon which handle socket the shank then occupies.
The chief feature of the present invention resides in forming the sockets and the shanks of a frusto-polygonal character whereby the tools may be disposed in either socket and non-rotatably retained therein; the anchor member effecting a wedging of the shank in the selected socket.
Other objects and features of the invention will be set forth more fully hereinafter.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a handle connector portion, hereinafter termed handle, illustrating the same as having longitudinally aligned and transversely disposed intersecting sockets.
Fig. 2 is a central sectional view thereof with a tool disposed in the so-called transverse socket and illustrated in end elevation.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the handle with a tool disposed in the so-called longitudinal socket, the tool being illustrated in top plan.
In the drawings l indicates an elongated handle portion having therein a tapered tubular socket H adapted to receive the tapered end of a wood handle, not shown. Hole I2 is adapted to take a suitable anchor member such as a screw, not shown. The handle 19 includes a head portion !3 provided with a frusto-octagonal inwardl tapered socket M, the axis of which coincides with the handle axis so that sockets i4 and II are substantially aligned.
The head [3 also includes another frustooctagonal inwardly tapered socket l5 which extends through the head portion and which has its axis disposed transverse to and intersecting the longitudinal axis of the handle. The two last mentioned sockets cross each other or intersect.
In Fig. 2, l6 indicates a tool having a blade portion II, a shank portion l8, and a reenforcing portion IS. The shank is complementary in form to the socket l5, but when seated therein does not project completely through the same for reasons hereinafter assigned.
Coaxial with said shank is the threaded bore ZEWA cap-screw bolt having head portion 2|, cap portion 22, and threaded shank 23 is adapted to have the latter threaded into the shank bore 20; and since cap portion 22 bears upon face 24 of said head I3, the screw draws the shank l8 into socket i5 and wedgingly seats the shank therein. Since the socket is regularly polygonal, the hoe blade may be disposed in other positions than that shown, such as a biased position, or in a position wherein the plane of the tool includes the handle axis. In this position the tool serves as an ax or chopping tool.
Reference will now be had to Fig. 3. Herein a second tool includes a cultivating blade 25 and a stem 26, longitudinally aligned, if desired, with shank 21. This is complementary to socket l4.
Shank 21 includes a transverse threaded bore 28. When this shank is seated in socket I4, the cap screw bolt aforesaid is disposed in the smaller end of socket l5, and eccentrically thereof as shown. The threaded shank 23 is threaded into bore 28 until cap portion 22 again bears upon face 24 of head l3. As shank 21 is drawn upwardly in the direction of the face 24 of the head and in the socket M, the tapers are such that the shank 21 is wedged home in socket 14.
Thus, the cap screw bolt in either instance has threaded association with a tool shank to wedgingly seat same in the selected socket and also retains the shank in that socket.
The several tools may be cast steel, forgings, and the like. The handle may be of similar material. The only machining required is the drilling and tapping of the tool shanks. The economy of production and simplicity of construction will be self evident from the foregoing description.
While the invention has been illustrated and described in great detail in the drawings and foregoing description, the same is to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive in character.
The several modifications described herein, as well as others which will readily suggest themselves to persons skilled in this art, all are considered to be within the broad scope of the invention, reference being had to the appended claims.
The invention claimed is:
1. In combination an elongated handle having at one end a head portion with a longitudinally disposed inwardly tapering socket opening at that end and a second similar socket disposed transversely of the first socket and intersecting same, a tool having a socket seatable similarly tapering shank, the shank having a threaded bore therein, and a threaded anchoring member having a threaded engagement with the shank in the threaded bore thereof and disposed in the second mentioned socket and having operative bearing upon the head portion adjacent that socket for drawing the shank into a head socket and wedgingly holding the shank in the socket.
2. Structure as defined by claim 1 wherein each socket is polygonal in cross-sectional character and the tool shank is of complementary character.
3. Structure as defined by claim 1 wherein the said transverse socket extends completely through the head portion.
4. Structure as defined by claim 1 wherein the shank threaded bore of a transverse socket mounted tool is disposed coaxially of the shank.
5. Structure as defined by claim 1 wherein the shank threaded bore of a longitudinal socket mounted tool is disposed transversely of the iongitudinal axis of the shank of said tool.
6. Structure as defined by claim 1 wherein the REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
