RUFUS H. SIIUMWAY AND WILLIAM D. SHUMWAY, F LEBANON SrRINes, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORS r0 SAIL RUFUs H. SHUMWAY.
SAW-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,907, dated June 24, 1884. I
Application filed March 24, 1884. (ModeL) I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RUFUS H. SHUMWAY and WILLIAM D. SHUMWAY, both of Lebanon Springs, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inlSaw-Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention more particularly relates to IO the handles of cross-cut saws for sawing logs and trees; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a side View of a cross out saw-blade in part, with one of its handles, and as in position for sawing up logs, the means used for attaching the saw-blade being the same as regards both end handles. Fig. 2 is an inside face View of the handle with the saw-blade detached; Fig. 3, a section on the line :10 w in Fig. l; and Fig. 4, a side View of the handle with the saw-blade adjusted into a plane at right angles to the position shown for it in Fig. 1, and adapted to sawing trees.
A indicates one handle of the saw, which is grooved longitudinally and crosswise on the inner end of its face, to receive on and within it plates B B and O O, constructed and arranged to form longitudinal grooves b b and cross-grooves c 0, of any desired depth and of a width corresponding with the thickness of the saw-blade or thereabout, so as to receive the end of vthe saw-bladefreely within them.
The wood portion of the handle is also constructed with a many-sided rectangular re- 0 cess, (1, extending inward from its frontside or face at the junction of the plates B B and O O, and said plates constructed to correspond, the saine forming rectangular spaces or cavities cf at right angles with each other and re- 4 5 spectively parallel with the grooves I) c. The
handle A has also a hole, through it in line i with the junction of said plates, and may be fitted with a perforated back plate, D.
E is a hook, the body h of which is of fiattened construction and set to one side of the screw-shank t, and the nose is of which is arranged to engage with a hole, Z, near the end of the saw-blade G when in place.
To secure the saw-blade in position for sawing up logs, as Shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the blade G, having the nose is of the hook inserted through the hole Z in it, is adjusted into avertical position with its teeth downward, and is inserted at both of its ends, respectively, within thelongitudinal grooves bin either handle, and the body and shank portion of the hook projected within and through the handle, and so that the flattened portionh of the hook engages with the walls of the rectangular space or cavity e, to lock the saw-blade in position, a thumb-screw, H, being applied to the screwshank of the hook to tighten the saw-blade in its place.
When it is required to secure the saw-blade in position for sawing trees, said blade is adjusted to lie horizontally or crosswise of the handle or handles, as shown in Fig. 4, and the flattened portion h of the body of the hook made to engc ge with the walls of the rectangnlar locking space or cavity f, and the thumbnut H turned to tighten up the saw-blade, as before.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with either saw-handle A, jof the plates B O, constructed to form longitudinal grooves 12, cross-grooves c, and locking-cavities e j, the saw-blade-holding hook E, constructed to engage with the walls of either of said cavities, and the nut H, essentially as shown and described.
