Description
H. J. BORSGH.
POCKET SCREW DRIVER.
- APPLICATION FILED JAN. 8, 1909.
933,878. Patented Sept. 14,1909.
HENRY JOHN BORSCI-I, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
POCKET SCREW-DRIVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1909.
Application filed January 8, 1909. Serial No. 471,242.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. BORSCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Screw-Drivers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved pocket screw driver, the object of the invention being to provide an article of this character, which may be attached to a watch chain, and be conveniently carried in the vest pocket.
A further object is to provide an improved casing with improved mounting for the screw driver shank, enabling the latter to be held within the casing, or be securely locked in position projecting therefrom, and provide improved means for permitting the removal of the shank when desired, and hence enable the ready assemblage of the parts.
W'ith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations, and ar rangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements in operative position. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the shank inclosed within the casing. Fig. 3 is a view of the opposite side of the casing. Fig. 4, is a view in cross section, and Fig. 5, is a view of the slide removed.
1 represents the casing provided at one end with a ring 2, adapted for the attachment to a watch chain, keyring, or the like, and preferably of the general semi-cylindrical form in cross section as shown in Fig. 4:.
The casing l is provided with a longitudinal slot 3 having an L-shaped laterally extending slot portion d at one end to receive a lug 5 on the screw driver shank 6, and constitute in effect, a bayonet joint to allow the shank to be rigidly secured in its extended position, ready for use, as shown in Fig. 1.
The shank is of general cylindrical form to enable it to be freely turned inside of the casing 1, so as to posit-ion the lug 5 in the slotted portion 4:, and allow it to be returned into the main slot 2, and the screw driver shank inclosed within the casing when moved to the position shown in Fig. 2. The lug 5 is preferably integral or permanently secured to shank 6, and to enable the shank and its lug to be inserted in the casing, I provide a removable slide 7, forming a portion of the casing wall, which is made with tongues 8 at its sides to slide in grooves 9 in the casing. The inner end of this slide is provided with a tongue 10, and a screw 11 is adapted to be screwed through the casing 1, and into a threaded opening in the tongue 10 to secure the slide in closed position. This side of the casing in which the slide 7 is provided is preferably flat as shown, but 1 do not of course limit myself to any particular shape, nor to the precise details of construc tion, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a tubular casing, having an open end, and a longitudinal opening extending from said open end, said casing having a longitudinal slot, and an L-shaped slotted extension at one end of the longitudinal slot, a screw driver shank of a diameter to enter said first mentioned opening, an integral lug on said shank positioned in the slot in the casing, a flat slide having tongues at its sides and ends, and adapted to be positioned in said first mentioned opening, and locked therein, and forming a flat side on said casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Tn testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY JOHN BORSCH. lVitnesses R. H. KRENKEL, J. A. L. MULHALL.
