county -of Los Angeles, State of California,
have invented a certain new and useful Screw Gripper and Driver; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, 'and exact description' of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to screw gripper and driver, and it may be said to consist in the provision of the novel and 'advantageous features and in the novel and improved lconstruction, arrangement, -and combination of arts in the device as w1ll be apparent from the description and claim which follow hereinafter.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device which in-practice is adapted tov act effectively to automatically grip the screws so that they are lfirmly held by the`device and need not be held by the fingers of the user of thevdevice.
A further object -of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device which is adapted to act effectively to grip the screws when the latter are being driven to place or when they are being withdrawn after being driven to place.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a novel and improved device of the class specified, which is simple in construction, strong and durable., attractive in ap- 4pearance, c'heap to manufacture, efective'in use, and 1n which the parts are adapted toA be easily and quickly assembled.
Further objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description of the preferred form of.v`
construction embodying the invention, taken;
in connect-ion with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an vice applied to a screw; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 4; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the movable parts in changed position; Fi 4 is a plan View of the outer elevational View of the de.`
portion of t e device; Fig. 5 is a cross-sec-1- tional view taken on the llne 5-5 of Fig. 2;
and Fig. 6 is a broken elevational view of tahe device at right angles to that shownin y, portion of the lingers 5' slot 18 in the screw 'thenbe pressed against the screw may be pressed against 'have the lingers 14 spring apart and firmly f 'rue bellow easinga, preferably cylindrical in form, has one end portion thereof formed to provide substantially oppositely disposed converging portions or s o'uldersl 8. Te the ether end portion of the easing 7 is secured a handle 9 which is provided with a substantially central longitudinal opening 10 alinement with the opening in the casing 7 and which has an annular shoulder l1 against which the end of the casing 7 abuts. A ferrule 12 may be tted against the casing 7 and over the inner end portion of the handle 9.
Within the casing 7 is slidably arranged a rod 13 which extends outwardly through the opening 1() in the handle 9. In the end portion of therod 13 within the casing 7 are securely fitted one end portion of fingers 14 which have the other end portion adapted to he normally sprung apart, see Fig. 2.
i The ingers 14 have thereon intermediate of their ends, diverging portions or shoulders 15 which are adapted to co-act with the shoulders 8 on the casing 7"to bring together the lower end portion of the fingers 14 as seen in Fig. 3.
To limit the inward and outward movement of the rod 13 a projection 16 isprovided on the end of the casing 7 within the handle 9 which projection is adapted to engage with the end walls of a slot or cutaway portion 17 formed in the rod 13.
From the foregoing the advantages and manner of use of the device will be evident to those skilled in the art, it being understood that when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, the rod 13 may be moved inwardly by pressing the outer end thereof with the lingers or against a wall or surface to have the parts moved to the position,
shown in Fig. 3, whereupon the free end 14 may be fitted in the 19 and the device may screw o1' the grip the screw.
While one form of construction embodying the invention has been particularly illustrated and described there are many changes and modifications thereof that will readily occur to those skilled in the art, wherefore the right is reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention asdefined in the appended claim.
the device to I claim:
A device vof the class specified, comprising a hollow casing having one end portion thereof provided with shoulders,A a handle securedto the other end portion of the casing and Drovided with an opening substantially in alinement with the casing, a rod slidahly arranged in the casing and adapted to extend through the opening in the handle, fingers having one end portion thereof secured to the rod Within the casing and hav'- ing the other end portion thereof adapted to normally spring apart, said' :fingers provided Wth shoulders adapted to co-act with the shoulders on the casing to move the fingers toward each other, and a proj eetion on the casing adapted to .limit the movement of the rod.
In testimony whereof, have signed my vname to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, Stateof California, this 4th day of January A. D. 1913.
