Be it known that 1, DAVID BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eraser and Pencil Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to holders for lead pencils and more particularly to a combined eraser and pencil holder. The main object of my invention is to produce a pencil holder that will use up short lengths of pencil, and

by use of my invention pencils can be used up to about one-half an inch in length be fore being discarded. Another object is to produce a holder for erasers in which a long eraser can be held and gradually fed out as it is worn ofl. I accomplish these objects by the use of a long barrel constructed to hold short lengths of pencils in one end, and having a carrier slidably mounted in the barrel and holding the eraser, and a cap on the end of the barrel for holding the end of the eraser rigid when the same is being used.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I have, invented a new improved combined pencil and eraser holder, which is an article of exceeding merit because of its superiority over others now in use.

I accomplish the above objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which,

My invention consists of a tubular barrel 1, cylindrical in cross section, and having internal threads at one end, as shown at'2,

and a slot on one side extending approximately two-thirds of its length, as indicated at 3. While the inside of this barrel should be cylindrical the outside may conform to any desired shape, such as hexagonal or octagonal in cross section, and may be made of any desirable material, either metal, or fiber, or anything suitable for devices of this character. The carrier 4 is divided into compartments by partition 6 and the wall of one of the compartments is slotted, as at 7, to allow spring action for the purpose of binding against the inner surface of the barrel to prevent rattling of the same. This compartment also has oppositely positioned lugs 8 for engaging the end of the eraser and holding the same firmly in the carrier. The carrier is also provided with a thumb-piece 9, which projects through the slot 3 in the barrel, for moving the carrier back and forth. A cap 10 is designed to slip over the end of the barrel, said cap having a clamping action due to a slot 11 cut in the side of the cap. The cap is also provided with an opening 12 in its end large enough to allow the eraser 5 to project through.

To use my device I screw a short piece of pencil 13 into the threaded end of the barrel. A long' eraser is inserted in the carrier, the carrier and the eraser slipped into the barrel, the thumb piece 9 sliding easily in the slot 3 and the cap 10 put over the end of the barrel the eraser 5 projecting through the opening in the cap. My device as described and illustrated is now ready for use, and as the pencil wears down it can be screwed out and used until practically none of it is left. As the eraser wears off itcan be fed out through the cap and owing to the length of the same can be used for a long period of time.
