To all whom, may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN H. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the' county and State of New York, have invented new" and useful Improvements in Lead and Crayon Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a lead or crayon holder of novel construction which is efficient and convenient in use; and to this end myinvention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows a vertical central section in the plane x x, Fig. 2, Fig. 2, a transverse section in the plane y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents the slotted tube having a plunger and provided with a crayon. y

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. A represents thehandle, made of wood or any other materialwhich is of proper appearance, and is comfortable to the touch when the device is held in the hand. This handle has iirmly secured` within it a screw, B, which, in the case shown, consists of a tube having a screw-thread formed on its interior. Vithin the screwB is placed a slotted tube, C, which is free to revolve easily within the screw, but

is prevented from being drawn out or falling out of the screwby its end being bent over to form a shoulder, D, which loosely rests or swivelsupon the inner end. Vit-hin the slotted tube slides a plunger, E, said plunger having a screw-head, F, whose screw-thread engages with the screw-thread of the screw B. By turning the slotted tube C in one direction or another the action ofthe screw B upon the screw-head F causes the plunger E to move toward or away from the -mouth H of the tube C, either moving` the crayon G toward said mouth or allowing said crayon to pass farther into the tube C. .The mouth H oi' the tube is shown as being slotted, thus forming spring jaws or clamps which grasp the crayon G and prevent it falling out of the tube C. To protect the mouth H of the tube C a cap, I, is attached to said tube C by means of soldering, or in any other desired way, said cap also serving to give an ornamental appearance.

The cap I may be either entirely omitted, simplifying the construction, or the cap I may be permanently attached to the tube C, thus avoiding theloss of such cap by its accidentally becoming detached.` The plunger E is also made to pass farther back into the tube C, allowing longer crayons to be accommodated by said tube.

The mouth H of the tube C being slotted, said tube will accommodate crayons of vary ing thicknesses, while the cap I covers such slotted mouth H and conceals the jaws formed by the same, also offering protection against breakage.

I am aware that a lead-pencil has been composed of a tubular handle, a screw therein, a longitudinally-slotted tube,and ai'ollower having a screw-head projecting through the slotted tube and engaging the screw for adjusting the lead, as in Patent No. 23,487, and such, therefore, I do not broadly claim; but j What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, in ale-ad or crayon holder, of a handleA provided with a screw, B, a slotted tube, C, having its inner end constructed with a laterallyfprojecting shoulder, D, swiveled upon the inner end of the screw, and the follower E, having a screw-head, F, projecting through the slotted tube, substantially as described.
